A question, Brink, if I want to reinstall 8.1 (for whatever reason) can I do it from the 8.1 DVD created as above with my 8.0 Product Key, or do I have to go through installing 8.0 and updating to 8.1?

I know this is a massive thread, and I haven't read all the way through, but can someone just clarify for me what I need to do? I have Windows 8.1 installed via 1) 8.0 DVD with product key, and then 2) upgrade to 8.1 OTA. I need to repair my 8.1 install, but Windows keeps telling me...

Yes, IE is only showing thumbnails on the desktop icon on the taskbar. I can't get it to show the proper window at all! It used to be OK. I'm sure it's something obvious. Any ideas?

I just realised that I didn't reply! Sorry. Well, after uninstalling a whole load of programs, he ended up with around 400Gb of free space and the install went fine after that. Now, I have no idea what specific event made the difference, so I can't be much help to anyone who may have the same...

Thanks again. He doesn't have access to another HDD on his PC. I did notice that there is only about 30Gb free on his drive. That couldn't be the problem could it?

Our happiness was short lived. After the download (and burn to DVD) went OK, the install didn't. It does all the pre-checks, and immediately after it starts the install, it fails with 'Windows 8 Install failed' message. I feel like giving up! I did a SFC /scannow in a Admin command prompt...

OK, we solved the problem, prompted by your tutorial. We deleted the Appdata/Local/Microsoft/Websetup folder, redownloaded the setup file from your link, and voila - it is now downloading. Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks Shawn. Yes, he has the product key, but it's at Step 6) that the problem lies. No matter what he selects, there is an error almost immediately. Error says 'Sorry, something happened and we couldn't finish creating the ISO. Restart setup and try again'. Which of course, we've tried a...

My son bought the Windows 8 upgrade on offer £24.99 from MS. But it will not download no matter what option he selects - install now, create media or install from desktop later. Just keeps failing saying there is an error and try later. Any ideas?

That was the answer, thanks. Downloading the 64 bit version worked.
