Do not know if it will work but did work for me on another computer with Windows 7. I uninstalled the drive and driver then restarted the computer. Windows update then re-downloaded driver and the drive was reinstalled. Then my drive was again functioning.

I think Windows Defender in Windows 8 is the same as Microsoft Security Essentials.

Just installed Firefox. It fixes the Flash problem I had with IE 10. Even in Desktop some websites that require Flash did not work and got message that needed to install Flash or if installed to enable. Could not get it to work even though Adobe site showed Flash was working. Firefox works...

You are right. Kind of like cable/satellite TV where you have access to hundreds of channels but rarely or never watch them. We will be paying for MS services we do not want or need.

I am using Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 that came as free download with my PC purchase from Costco. Have not had a problem and seems to not have slowed down my PC.
