I like the TORCH browser, similiar to Chrome but has far more to offer and is faster than any of the other leaders. TOR on the other hand is slow but offers complete security. The signal bounces around before access is granted and so the slowness is frustrating.

I have (had) the same problem and found that reloading Windows 8 was the only way I could get the computer accessible. However be careful as you will lose your files. I use a hard drive solely for the OS and store all info on another drive and a backup.

Download VLC. Far better and plays virtually everything. I have not found a codec it does not play.

You can set it up to be the same as Windows 7. Various apps in the app store can do this. The one I like is Classic Shell as it gives you various choices. I did not like Windows 8 or 8.1 to start with, but it is handy especially with touch screen apps. Once you get used to it it is fine.
