    So after waiting for 45 minutes, it got past the welcome screen and is now at a black screen? If you have the time, I would leave the system on overnight. If it is not remedied in the morning, boot into Recovery Console and use System Restore to undo the changes of the updates.

    How long is a "very long time"? This very well may be normal for Windows 8 because as I recall...one of the updates was 169MB.
