Thanks - how do I uninstall individual updates? I might be able to go back and look at installed updates to find the one that did it, more easily than individually installing 181 updates that took forever the first time around :P
Ok, so I just shut down fully, then turned back on (with external monitor plugged in). It booted on the laptop monitor until the user log-in splash came up which was now only on the external monitor.

A sure fire way of reaching the laptop monitor is:
Boot with external monitor
Shutdown via external monitor
Unplug external monitor
Boot to blank screen on laptop
Press Power Button on laptop (sends the laptop to Sleep)
Press Power Button and voila

I have tried both the latest driver from Intel (it's Intel HD 3000 graphics onboard), and also the older (now out of date) graphics driver from Medion (which is just an older version of the above). Same results for both.
Today I turned the laptop on to see the black screen again. I plugged in the monitor via HDMI and the desktop (taskbar, start window and icons appeared on the external monitor, the mouse cannot go left to the laptop monitor, it is now turned off when the external monitor is being used.
