I had just installed windows xp on a new partition formatted on NTFS. After the installation i am now unable to access my other operating systems which are vista and 8 as the boot selector doesn't even show and it boots straight into xp. The picture shows that the windows xp drive is now the boot drive and the original vista drive is the system drive. I believe that the vista drive held the boot file which provided the dual-boot at the time. I do not know how to get the vista boot loader to run and hooader. Any help appreciated Croydon-20121006-00079.jpgCroydon-20121006-00078.jpg

Add a new boot entry for Vista and 8.

I can't-i used easybcd and found that there wasn't actually an entry for XP-i added XP entry and rebooted but when I did I got invalid boot.ini error-can you give me a detailed set of instructions that I can use after I install a new windows XP-also easybcd doesn't have an 8 option so should I use the vista/7 option--thanks

Umm. No. You'll have to completely reinstall them. Unless you can get an expert to help you. EasyBCD usually works, but in your case it didn't.

If I remove the XP drive-surely it would go back to booting from the original dual-boot system drive

I see now-i have tried the fixmbr command and then tried a win xp install but it appears that the fixmbr has destroyed my partition tables-windows vista also shows this and now I have been left with no data left and a blank hdd----Windows XP,what a useless operating system

Well, did you format your HD? If so, of course you are going to have no data. Don't blame XP, it is an amazing OS.

no this is what happened over about a month. I installed vista on my machine and it was ok. i then installed windows 8 on a separate partition and it was ok. I used easeus partition manager to do this. I then created a 600mb and 1gb logical drives for program setup files storage. I then created a windows xp partition for a new xp installation and the boot loader was still working fine. I then installed windows xp on the new partition but it said it had performed maintenance on the hdd. When i booted no grub menu appeared and it booted into windows xp. Inside disk management it showed that the win xp drive was now the boot drive and the vista drive was still the system drive. I tried the fixboot and fixmbr commands but none worked and it left a boot error message saying bootmgr is missing. I am now using gpart to scan for any partitions as my hdd shows just one partition. If it doesn,t work i will just reinstall windows vista. Not much important data was on the hdd so it does not matter but re installation is a hassle:(

Well, it still sees your 8, Vista and XP installations. Should be able to recover them. Boot to your Vista disk, and try startup repair.

This is not recommended.

1) Install Windows XP.
2) Install Windows 7.
3) Install Windows 8.
