    Help with installation (Partition issues)

    Well hello,
I have a HP Folio 13 Notebook, that comes with a 128GB SSD and Win 7 Home.

Trying to install the Win 8 preview to run alongside 7, and came across some obstacles:

    1. Had problems shrinking my main partition through the WIN tool, so:
    - I ran defrag, and still got a very low shrink (14mb! pff).
    - Used EasyUS Partition tool and was able to resize.

    2. Now I cannot allocate the freed up space, when I try using the WIN tool to create a New Simple Volume it give the following error (To do so with the EasyUS tool would require turning one of the other primary partitions into a "Logical" partition, and as I understand this would wipe it..?):
"You cannot create a new volume in this un-allocated space because the disk already contains the maximum number of partitions"

    3. After a little bit of googling, I gathered that I should convert my disk into a "Dynamic Disk".
But I also found that doing so I would not be able to run Dual Boot (7 & 8).

    4. My current partition situation looks like this: (attached)

    A. I would like to be able to continue without losing D:"Recovery" partition, because the HP tool for backing that up requires either a 16GB Flash drive or DVD's, and I have neither.
    B. I don't know what that "SYSTEM" partition is.
    C. I think the empty 4GB partition has something to do with Intel Rapid Start.

    This is very frustrating..

I would greatly appreciate any advice :-\

    Hello, Talmarsh. Welcome to EightForums.

I'm on my phone, so short response for now.

Awfully small drive to put a lot on. What's the minimum for 7 if sacrificing some programs there? Don't have a good DVD drive for backup? We need to figure out system partition and 4GB of course. Can you afford a thumb drive for Windows to go?

    Thanks for the quick comment!

I know it's cramped, I'm doing it so I could evaluate Win 8 and decide whether or not I should buy an upgrade..

I think that 4gb partition has something to do with Intel Rapid Start..

If I create an image backup of the recovery partition, then mess everything up - will I be able to load it onto a thumb drive and boot from it? Because right now that partition is bootable and it won't be once I make it logical (I think..?). Then if windows is corrupt I won't be able to access it anyway..
(I don't have one as big right now but if everything goes down hill I guess I'll just buy one).

    Ahh okk I got it.
I turned the Recovery partition logical and it did the trick. I got win 8 running.
I can even still go into the HP recovery mode during the boot sequence.

    Hi Talmarsh

Good to know have solved the issue.
Here are some that you might want to know.
What you referred as in 5 B (I don't know what that "SYSTEM" partition is.) is an unlettered hidden drive created during Windows installation that contain Windows system boot files. We usually do nothing to it.

Since your system has its recovery drive, in the future if in case you have serious problem with Windows 7 and have to recover the system using the tool from HP, be sure to first also backup all data saved in Windows 8 to external media as in the rebuilding process the system will be restored to its original state when you purchased it. It means any changes made on the way (including Win 8 installation drive) will be completely overwritten.

If you have known it, just ignore this.

    Hi Talmarsh,
Just a little advice: Do whatever, but never mess with the System partition. Your machine might face fatal errors otherwise.

    Thanks a lot guys!
@ Kevin - I really had no idea, that the factory reset would also reset the partitions - good to know!

This OS is snappy! cut my Turn system on - to Gmail @ Chrome in half!! (to 22~s.)
I hope the full version is a lot better though, as this has some major shortages app-wise..

    Thanks again!
