What REALLY is the windows 8 pro upgrade

So i keep reading over and over again about how there will be a windows 8 pro upgrade for $36 (digital) and $69 (DVD). my question is do these "upgrades" absolutely REQUIRE a previous version of windows to be installed before running or can you simply purchase one and install a completely clean copy of win8 onto a formatted HDD with no version of windows whatsoever...

i'm the type of guy who likes to do a completely clean install of everything and although im hesitant of win8 these prices are hard to pass up since i will most likely move to the OS sooner or later anyway. when i install win8 i plan to do it on a completely wiped and formatted system so my question is, is this possible with the digital copy (can i download and burn it in .iso so i can preform a install from boot) or will the $69 DVD option allow me to install from boot as well? (im concerned about the word "upgrade" and that even though its on a DVD it will check for a current windows OS installation before proceeding, eliminating the possibility of doing a clean install.

if anyone here has any answers for me it would be much appreciated

You can perform an clean install with the media and Ed Bott said that having a prior version of Windows physically installed was not a requirement, you must just have a CoA sticker or proof of having a previous license for a prior version of Windows.

i thought those requirements were only for purchasing the $14.99 version (for pc's purchased between june 2nd 2012 and january 13th 2013) i wasn't aware of any "verification" for the standard "upgrade" media and DVD purchases... how will they check to verify purchase if you do it online and how will they check for instore purchase of DVD????? im very curious now because it sounds like less of an upgrade and more of a full windows 8 pro but with a background check prior to purchase ...

My understanding was that you needed to be running a prior version of windows to buy the upgrade copy. from there, you can install clean. In the event down the road that you had to start over, (for example, hard drive died), i don't think you need to first install windows 7 and then upgrade to Windows 8 again. I might be wrong though. I don't buy upgrades...i usually buy the OEM or retail versions because it's almost always going on a new computer.

More reading seems to be indicating the latter though, you are going to need to have XP, Vista or 7 on the hard drive first and then be given a clean install option. Another great reason to make an image right after install.

This seems to confirm that you will need an installed OS on that hard drive: Windows 8: New Installation with Upgrade not possible

Sorry to have been confusing and incorrect in my first responses.

Latest news is that you can upgrade on Win8 RP.

"Computerworld got it right. Assuming the customer had a previous version of Windows installed before Release Preview, they’ll be able to upgrade from the Release Preview. They won’t need to reinstall the previous version to do the upgrade; they can just upgrade on top of the Release Preview."

In follow-up answers, Microsoft said that users running Windows 8 Release Preview -- the newer of the two sneak peeks, shipped on May 31 -- can upgrade using the Windows.com upgrade tool and pay the $40.
However, the only bits that are retained during that upgrade are personal data files. Other elements, including the applications, Windows settings and user accounts that migrate from Windows 7, do not.

I believe you don't need any verification to get the 14.99 version(copy). If you have Xp, Vista, 7 or 8RP you can do the upgrade to Win 8 RTM. In the case of 8RP you will not keep settings, files or programs. I have 8RP and when I get the RTM I'll do a clean instillation and not upgrade.

so what we are really getting down to is that if you want a clean install, you need to have a NON-upgrade, OEM version of windows 8........

what would happen if you purchase a windows 8 pro upgrade for the KEY so you have a legal copy but install using an OEM DVD. will the upgrade key be recognized on OEM DVD?

You can do a clean install of Win8 RTM you get from from the download. All you need is follow the instructions here:
This will show you how to do a clean install of Windows 8 RTM or Windows 8 Release Preview.

    And Here:
Create Bootable USB or DVD with Windows 8 ISO

The latter is the instructions on how to create the bookable DVD. And the first is how to do a clean install with the download.
