    DVD drive - Windows 8

Is it so, that when Windows 8 is installed, that the DVD in my Laptop becomes inoperative? Also, has anyone had any problems installing Windows 8 directly from the download file on top of Windows 7?

(Please type slowly in all responses in order for me to understand the answer - thanks)

Hello Gloosecap, and welcome to Eight Forums.

False. Your DVD drive for your laptop will still work just fine with Windows 8.

You shouldn't have any issues with installing Windows 8 directly in Windows 7 to replace/upgrade Windows 7 to Windows .

    Hope this helps,

Thank you Brink for your reply. I have been told to have a proper installation of Windows 8 Preview, is to burn the ISO file to a DVD and do a clean install. But I'm taking it from your reply, I can simply click on the download file I have on my laptop at present and install from that with no problems, well, at least hopefully no problems.
The Laptop I have is a Toshiba L675 model with a 500 Gig hard drive and 8 Gigs of RAM.

Hopefully if I get the nerve to install Windows 8 Preview, I won't have to use my fire extinguisher on this laptop! :-)

If you are downloading a ISO of Windows 8, you will still need to extract the contents of the ISO as described in the tutorial.

However, a clean install is the best method to use to make sure that you have no issues from the previous Windows in the new one.

I mention the ISO file - is there something else or another type of Windows 8 Preview other than the ISO type that one can download and install right from Windows 7? And if so (which I understand there is) can you give me the proper site to download that from. Also, will or does this have an expiry date or is it ongoing.

Another question - when the finished product of Windows 8 does happen to rumble upon the scene, will one be able to install that finished product over the Preview edition?

Currently the official copy if Windows 8 RP only comes as a ISO file at the link below.

While you will be able to upgrade from RP to RTM, you might as well do a clean install since nothing from the RP will be kept in the upgrade process to RTM.
