Vista partition unbootable since Win 8 install

I have had Vista 64-bit OS installed on an existing primary partition.

Due to curiosity I decided to check out Win8 and installed Win8 64-bit on a separate primary partition on a different hard-disk.

However since doing so I am unable to boot to Vista. Furthermore, all the usual system settings don't have the Vista OS available as a bootable option.

I'm very sure I didn't delete or overwrite the Vista partition, the above Disk Management picture shows this. The red boxes are the Win8, and the green boxes are the Vista. I am also still able to access the contents of the Vista partition via Explorer from within Win8.

What can I do to allow the computer to recognise Vista again as a default boot option?

    Thanks for any help

    It looks ok.

Add an entry for Vista to win8 boot menu.

Probabaly easiest for you to use easybcd ( community =free version )to do it for you EasyBCD Download Registration Page — NeoSmart Technologies

Insert your vista dvd or a windows 7 dvd and boot and repair the boot up. The menu will then show both items as recovered and you should then be able to dual boot. easybcd is hit and miss on working.

Do you know how to use the bootrec.exe command?

It will probably take a bootrec /rebuildBCD to find all the OSes. And you will probably need to boot to the install media and select Repair, then go to the command window.

Or, and some folks prefer this, use the boot device menu to select either the drive with Windows 8, or the one with Windows 7. They should both be bootable.

Thanks for all your help guys. Added an entry into the suggested Easybcd program and that worked a treat.

Thank you. I was panicking a bit.

I am fairly disgusted with Windows 8. Unfortunately, someone installed it on my computer and uninstalled Vista. I asked a question at this thread. I have marked it solved. Now I have a question for my own curiosity...... I've read from one of the Windows articles that after Win 8 is installed over Vista, ( not dual boot, it's clean install), the recovery partition is no good to re-install Vista back to...
