Solved Win7x64 Ult -> Win8 Pro RTM upgrade failure

Got my Win7 install all ready to go for Win8 tonite and kicked off the upgrade.

It got so far as to reboot and show "Getting system ready" then it error'd out with "Windows was unable to upgrade one or more components" and then reverted me back to win7.

Where can I go to find out more about what error'd out so I know what I have to do to fix this?

Think i found the log in the Pather dir. here's what I found when searching for 'Error' and grabbing the first hit and some context:

I am trying to do the same thing as you and am having a similar problem.
After the reboot, all I get is the blue logo and the spinning circle.

I have tried many things, without success.
It is a GIGABYTE GA-X79-UD5 motherboard.

I have checked the file hash of my TechNet ISOs, and have tried upgrading using a USB, mounting the ISO and using a DVD. I get the same result no matter what media I use.
I have tried disabling the Marvell controllers on my GIGABYTE motherboards, as I read they can cause problems, but with no success. I have also tried disabling any additional hard drive so there is only a single drive (SSD) plugged in. I have also tried moving my main SSD to a different controller. I have also upgraded the BIOS on my motherboards and have also upgraded the firmware on my SSDs.

Here is a picture of the screen where my installation is stuck. The circle keeps spinning, but the installation does not progress past that.

hi stigg
my experiences of upgrading have all gone well. The screenshot that you have posted is normal however and although it may appear to have stalled it has not and can take up to 30 minutes to continue in complete silence from the hard drive
Microsoft should code a message i feel to say all is well or speed up the final transition
i would try again and good luck

no that is way to long i would try again downloading the 64bit/32bit as applicable pro 8 using the Microsoft down loader that is signed and then burn the ISO with imgburn to a new DVD
as i said above the process is slow i felt it was slow anyhow and think there is room for improvement come the public release
as you are upgrading from within windows do make sure that that no program's are running if your going for a full clean install then the best way is to just boot from the dvd and install that way
lets us know how it goes

Nick. I have checked the file hash with what is posted on Microsoft's site, and mine is the same.
I have also successfully installed using the same ISO on another computer.

I have tried using a DVD, using a memory stick and mounting the ISO, but it always stops as posted previously.

As long as you have done as my suggestions then i cant add anything further

you may have to do a full format and install from boot which will obversely work and forget about upgrading not ideal but at least you move forward

There are many types of reasons on why a upgrade may fail my sons for example got to the last five minutes of install on his laptop and then all hell broke out it sounded as if the fire alarm had gone off same type of sound I've never heard anything like it in my life and hope i never have to again so he had to end up doing a full format and reinstall and all went well

OK. I have solved my problem.

I started the installer upgrade in Windows, then after the second reboot before it starts the installation outside of Windows, I went into the BIOS and changed my Intel SATA controller from AHCI to IDE.

I saved the BIOS settings, then it rebooted and began to install fine. No more logo and spinning circle problem.

After getting back into Windows 8, I wanted to enable AHCI, so I used the procedure for changing it from this site here.


Thanks for everyone's suggestions, but sometimes you just have to be persistent and find a solution yourself.
