Windows 8 To Go...

For everyone that is curious, I have successfully got the leaked RTM build of Windows 8 on a To Go drive. Normally, this wouldn't be significant, but I used the leaked Pro build and not the Enterprise build, which has been decreed as the version that will do that. Odd, I guess Microsoft might be considering the Pro version as just a retail version of Enterprise. There's a strange thing it's doing right now. After the OOBE screen where the multicolor screen says "We're getting things ready," it's also cycling through with Installing app and Taking care of a few things and Almost ready.

I don't know about anyone else, but it would be an AWESOME idea to sell USB 3 flash drives with Windows 8 installed.

Hi there
Where did you get "Pro" version from --just curious !!.

Incidentally so long as you have the WAIK and the BOOT command from W8 this should theoretically work on ALL versions of Windows -- the relevant Boot command will probably not be on the final editions of Windows 8 and the command from W7 doesn't work.

What you will probably find trouble with in using a "Non Enterprise" W8 version is the activation system which will probably want activation when you boot it on computers with different hardware. Not being a VL license it will probably want activation.

Another possibility of getting a "Windows to Go" to work with ANY version of Windows - such as W7 is perhaps to try and create ms format VHD's (Virtual Hard disks) and find a way of booting these directly either via something like Linux GRUB or a boot loader.

Cheers

I just installed the Enterprise Trial on my spare PC. It has the "Windows to go" option in control panel. I ran it and used an external 80 gig USB 2 hard drive I had on hand. It warned me that the performance might suffer as a result but did let me continue. It would only let me use an Enterprise image (WIM) to make the Windows to go though. I put my 8 RP DVD in my optical drive and it listed the images but wouldn't let me use them. I haven't tried booting up to it yet, it only just finished the build a couple of minutes ago.
