    upgrading from xp

Hi everybody.I am currently running w8 rp on spare hdds on two pcs,one 32 bit and one 64 bit. When w8 comes on the market in october,I will buy a 64 bit upgrade (cheapest option). However, both pcs are running 32 bit xp and I wonder how a clean install will work with an upgrade? My third pc is running w7 64 bit but I dont want to mess about with that. By the way,I quite like w8 but I will not be buying a touch screen.

It will probably be like the upgrade installers for Windows 7. They say "upgrade" but I have been able to use them as installers after wiping my discs. Just simply pop the disk (or USB) into your computer, choose the custom option and delete all your partitions (or just the ones you want) and then create a new partition and voila, clean install.

If you read the relevant posts, the general consensus seems to be that you will have to have an upgradeable version of Windows on the Partition where you want to install Win 8 upgrade, which is a step further in checking than the previous versions....not sure whether youy will be able to upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit....I'm hanging on to 64 & 32 bit Vistas.....

    I don't know for certain.

If it's like Windows 7, you'd boot from the 64 bit DVD. (You aren't permitted to launch the 64 bit DVD from a 32 bit version of Windows.) A 32 bit XP copy would qualify for the use of an upgrade license, although a custom (clean) installation would be required. You are allowed to delete the old OS partition and format it, if you like.

Thanks everyone. It looks like a clean instal after all.It occured to me that prior to W7,64 bit windows was very rare so most people upgrading from XP or Vista would only have a 32 bit os installed.I am lucky that I dont need to save any files when upgrading.
