    Win 8 RP -> RTM

    Will we be able to go from the RP to RTM or retail version? We couldn't with Win 7.

    I believe this time we can.

    This time even upgrading directly from Win XP and Vista is possible. And somewhere was mentioned that an upgrade from RP to RTM is possible.
    We'll just have to wait and see.

    MS will allow you to Upgrade from RP to RTM but it is limited. You can only save your personal files and then it does a clean install, so all your settings and programs have to be re-installed.

    There was a hack that permitted the RTM of Win7 to install as an upgrade-in-place over the RC. (I never tried it.)

    I expect that someone will come up with a similar hack for the Win8 RP. I'm not competent to do it, I regret to say.

    That is what I wanted to avoid: re-installing gigs upon gigs of programs.

    That is WHY you DON'T!! This isn't a full flavor operating system. Only thing that should be on it is the beta, and betas for other programs. 3 things for me on this partition Windows 8 RP, MS Office 2013, and Bull Guard Security betas. Once everything with this version is done with, bye bye partition, and hello new Windows 8 RTM partition. NOT about to fubar my Win7, and Linux partitions.

    Yeah, I don't usually recommend upgrading any OS, it's best from a performance standpoint to start from scratch. I feel even more so about coming from a beta/non-released version.

    I have made the mistake of upgrading Vista to Windows 7.

    Optimized services, regularly disk but there are still many tasks which have been taken over from Vista which are slowing down the system.
    The registry hives also have many unused entries I suspect but I would not run registry optimizers - they can make a system completely unuseable.

    It is better to reinstall (really) needed programs on a new system, copy some user files and that's it.
    This is like moving home - no need to carry all the old crap over...

    How will it determine you are eligible for the upgrade?

    Perhaps they will just count the arrows in the back of us "pioneers".
