While at a computer show, I found a Windows 8.1 Pro disk with CD key. Seller assured me key was un-used. Since I got an old computer up and running, I bought the disk for $25. Of course, no receipt. Well anyway, it started to install and asked for the key, I entered key, it took it and finished installing.
So after downloading/installing a ton of software, I checked Updates and its telling me its not activated. So I tried the key again and it said "Try again later". I've tried again later for two days. So then I tried to buy a key on-line. Same thing..."Try again later".
I have no idea. Either the key is bogus, or Microsoft is "Out to Lunch" for the past two days.

Should I keep trying the key and/or buying a new key on-line ... or find/buy a new CD key and hope its not a rip-off again?

Yes. No problem. I downloaded and installed Chrome, a bunch of files from FileHippo.com, and right now Windows is downloading and installing up-dates.

to check your OS copy is activated. In the windows 8 search box, type slui.exe which is a file found in “C:\Windows\System32\” folder under windows installation. This open up a window providing a bunch of details about the Windows 8 activation like windows expiration date, last section of your serial number, and an option to activate windows with a valid new product key.

No. slui.exe just takes me to the product activation screen. And again, the key says...try later.

This time, there is no Buy a Key button. Just Activate and Try a Different key buttons.

Like I said. I got ripped off. I bought a new key for $37 (ouch). It worked. So $62 later and Windows is activated.

Thanks everyone, for all the help. :D

Contact Microsoft Support, I got ripped off $20 buying a key locally. Always buy your keys through Microsoft or someone you can 100% trust.
