    Windows 10 trying to install

Working on a friends PC that has Windows 8.1. Just doing a cleanup. I checked for updates and it wants to install Windows 10. I have attached a doc with the issue. There is no Windows 10 icon in the task bar. Its been a long time since I dealt with the Windows 10 sneaking in issue. Need a little help on permanently removing any and all windows 10 stuff. This PC is not 10 compatible.

EDIT: I just realized where I posted this. Brain fried. Just took college algebra test. If I need to post in another area please let me know.

Here's a couple of links straight from TenForums.

Get Windows 10 Icon - Remove from Taskbar in Windows 7 and 8.1 - Windows 10 Tutorials

Upgrade to Windows 10 Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 7 or 8.1 - Windows 10 Tutorials

For the second link, I personally recommend Option 2, as it is probably the easiest method to disable this. Simply download the .REG file and run it, and it will update the registry entries to the system to disable the upgrade to Windows 10.

On the other hand, the period of time for Microsoft to push the upgrade to Windows 10 for free has expired, so it is unlikely that the system would continue to the point of installing the upgrade anyway. You could just update the system and see what happens, which would most likely stop before upgrading, as the free upgrade is no longer available.

Microsoft will activate an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free still (but we don't know how long it will last).

Thank you. That worked. I took your recommendation on option 2 of the second link. This PC does not have 10 drivers so I think it best to stay with 8.1

I will say that MOST systems that can run 8 / 8.1 can easily handle the upgrade to 10 through native drivers from 10. In other words, you would let it install, and the drivers included in the OS can often handle the system's requirements for 10. Those that it can't use, are often found and installed through Windows Update, or Device Manager.

    Just a consideration.
