A friend gave me a gateway desktop computer he wasn't using anymore.

I wanted to start fresh, so i pulled the hard drive and hot-swaped it into another computer and reformatted it.

I put the drive back in and turned it on intending to install a fresh copy of windows 8.

but, it keeps coming up trying to repair windows instead. There is nothing to repair, but I keep getting the repair options.

How can I make it stop trying to repair an operating system that isn't even there any more?

You need to use a bootable media like an install DVD or USB jumpdrive and reinstall windows form it.

What you should have done is instead of formatting delete all the paritions and leave it blank you may have formated c: but left the boot paritition

I've had the same problem. If you didn't wipe all of the partitions, do that, otherwise, just install the new windows onto the current partition and delete the recovery one.
