Is the 64bit ISO bootable?

I have put together a PC using parts from old dead ones. The hard drive has no OS on it, so I downloaded the ISO, made a disc, set BIOS to boot from DVD, inserted disk and...

Select proper boot device or insert media and hit any key.

Old dead ones ... have you checked that the DVD drive is alive (does it register on the main page of the BIOS screen)? - i.e. connected, powered and fit to work.

Oh and did you hit any key?

Didn't check it is registered in the BIOS, but it fires up and closes the tray on boot, LED flashes.

I'm not near the PC at the moment. Should I check that it's in the BIOS or is firing up enough?

Yes, I hit any key.

The 64-bit disk should be bootable if it has no problems. Just trying to cover all the bases - The other part of the system is the disk itself - is it bootable? - sometimes there are media failures. Have you other known bootable disks that can be tried? Can that 64-bit disk be booted in another PC?

The discs are bootable, hte problem is the physical media you created isn't bootable more than likely. How did you burn the disc? I'ave had issues with windows 7's iso burner not creating burnable discs, so I typically use nero. If you can boot from a windows 7 disc, or any other disc, it's the actual windows 8 disc that is not set up to boot. If you have a 4+gb flash drive, I'd try that, it's a lot easier, and drives can be had for $5-10. However there's a specific procedure to set up a flash drive to be bootable. Once it is, you can copy installs from any windows disc onto it and boot right away with ease.

I got the PC to boot from USB, then it couldn't find a drive for the installation, so there's my problem. I swapped out the drive, but still no good.

I have a spare 1TB drive in the office. I'll bring that home tomorrow.

OK! Time to do SOME work then, once you install that new hard-drive, well before, make sure it is set to cable-select, and DON'T toss that other drive out, check to make sure it is ACTUALLY dead, so after you remove it, set it to "Slave", and I would suggest you create s system disc, and slap it into your CD/DVD drive, that way you can check your drive(s) before you install O/S on it. Also, with setting the original HDD to slave, you should be able to grab your information/files off of it before you do a HARD format on it. A quick format isn't advisable.

Immaterial, look at either the manual that came with the PC, or go online and look at the configurations of the hard drive that came with it. If it was an SSD drive, it wouldn't be applicable. Also, if the same drive is available at your local computer retailer, I would say to save yourself time and stress and purchase it.

I'm mixing and matching from some old dead PCs, so not really sure what should be inside it - for settings etc.

All components within that PC will have part # and brand names (generic, or name brand) that will allow you to go to said part(s) webpage and ID it, and see the settings for said components. Even with older parts say circa 1990s parts and setting are still available to this very day. As a matter of fact, I had to find settings/component list for a circa 1990s Compaq Presario 9640 (P1_90MHz CPU) Desktop/PC that came with Windows 3.1, and a GIANT 45meg (Yes meg) hard-drive. Back then believe it or not, they used a chip on the mobo for the video card, NOW that was a nightmare to find drivers for it, but with research, updating the BIOS, new ISA (used actually) Video card it is now running, nicely Unbuntu Linux, NOW if I can get this updated, upgraded you shouldn't have a problem doing it.

One shot in the dark - In the BIOS, can you make sure that the date and time is within a few seconds of the real time for your zone.
