At present I am running win 7 but expect to change to win 8. I understand the consept of UEFI and i am looking forward to installing win 8 when released to joe public, though I do need help before then especially on storage space

1) I have 4 internal hard discs (4TB) which i use at present will the system recognise these discs? or will I have to do something to them so that they are recognised?
2) What Hard disc would you suggest for main installation.

Any help you can give would be appreciated

Welcome to EightForums alexanderd

For storage 4TB is more than enough, but I do not have assurance to give you to the point that it is Windows 8 ready.

I'm currently running on a dual boot.

About the system requirements you can visit this link http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3997-windows-8-release-preview-download.html

For the hard drive I suggest D: just leave Win 7 on your C: so that if you got in trouble from Win 8 you still have the Win 7.

And when you install make sure to have a http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html

due to the new software (win8) and the way it is installed I think i set out my initial query incorrectly, the discs I have are hard discs which I store my bacups, pictures ect. when installing win 8 do i have to do anything or will the storage space just show up as it does in win 7 as disc 1,2,3 ect. as in the attached jpg. at present my motherboard supplier "MSI" tell me they have no drivers or info on how to go ahead and setup the motherboard prior to installation at the present time.

This does not show 4TB, but 3X500GB and 1TB in 4 disks.

If you install Windows 8 by most of the usual installation methods offered by Microsoft it will probably use the same partition as Windows 7, basically overwriting it. UEFI is not obligatory yet, so I would not worry about it. Windows 8 is quite happy using PCs which have a BIOS, or those set to use UEFI. Windows 8 should recognize your disks without any difficulty.

If you wish to install Windows to a different partition, you will need to create one.

There is another way,and that is to install to a Virtual Hard disk - which is a file that emulates a hard disk, and you have plenty of free space to do it on your system.

While Windows 8 Release Preview is still beta software, I would advise that you don't change your system permanently, retain your Windows 7 and run Windows 8 as a second booting OS.

Brink has kindly prepared a tutorial for this here:

A fixed VHD of 30GB on one of your unpartitioned disks should work fine.

Food for thought, perhaps a 2tb hdd for windows is not a great idea. In my experience, putting all your crap on the same drive as windows will only cause you woe's when you go to re-install, upgrade, downgrade, etc. I'd recommend getting something like a 64-128gb ssd for windows, then using the 2tb for storage. It will be MUCH faster, and you won't risk loss of data should you need to wipe and start over. Even if you partition, it's still a hassle. Delete the wrong partition and it's game over.

that looks even better but what about all the programs (office /outlook / photoshop/ lightrooom and anti-virus) that I use as widows is normally on my C:/ drive , 128GB will not hold everything, at present my C:/ drive uses 300GB of 500GB. Is there a way I can do all these programs on a separate disc Call it D:/ drive for an instance and still run windows and access the programs?

Typically your programs won't take up that much space. I have on my 60gb SSD win7, a few games, photoshop, office 2010 with outlook, and adobe premier. However I also make sure my "stuff" doesn't end up on hte boot drive, like random videos, downloads, and so on.

And yes, you can install everything on a seperate drive. I make sure to have windows, photoshop, premier, office on my ssd because they run so much better. During installation, you can select path. For programs I don't need, I tell them to install to the j:\programs\ directory to avoid clutter of my boot drive.

Have a look on your desktop, your downloads folder, and so on, you'll probably find a fair amount of "stuff" that you normally wouldn't need to keep on that drive.

This is beyond me. Why do you need 300 to 500GB for the OS. I run 6 systems with 60GB SSDs and on not a single one the OS including a LOT of programs (including Office, several graphics programs, AV and the whole 9 yards) exeeds 30GB. My data though is on a seperate HDD.
