Win 8.1 Install process and bios boot mode settings.

Win 8.1 install says a required partition is missing. I read variously that the solution is to delete all partitions. Some say format the single partition. Others say just delete all partitions and leave as drive 0 unallocated. Will this leave the partition "structure" type as EIF GPT if it was that for the drive to begin with?

    As a side issue:

I THOUGHT I had to turn off EIF Boot mode in bios and set cms in order to boot from installation DVD, but maybe that is just for USB booting.

    But my main question is:

If deleting all partitions now allows win 8.1 to install, is it important what the bios boot mode is set to during this installation or only after installation on boot up IF the installation was executed with the idea that you wanted to use eif boot mode?

Hope that makes sense. Thank you.

    Hello hardya,

    Step 1.

Use Media Creation Tool to create bootable Windows 8.1 USB for Legacy BIOS and UEFI.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...nload/windows8

    Step 2.

    https://technet.microsoft.com/fi-fi/...or=-2147217396

Boot to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode.

    1. Boot the PC. As the firmware starts to run, press the key that opens the boot device menu. For example, press the Esc, F2, F9, F12, or other key to enter the firmware or boot menus.

    2. On the boot device menu, select the command that identifies both the firmware mode and the device.

    Note

You might see separate commands for the same device. For example, you might see UEFI USB Drive and BIOS USB Drive. Each command uses the same device and media, but boots the PC in a different firmware mode.
    Step 3.

    OK thanks.

I already did step 1 before what I described in my first paragraph.

Re my "is it important what the bios boot mode is set to during this installation"

Does your step 2 pt 2 answer that? I don't quite follow. I know how to change the boot mode, I just want to know if it's important and what it should be set to during installation of win 8.1.

    Yes.

When you boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI mode, then Windows setup creates a GPT partitioned disk.

When you boot from the Windows installation media in Legacy BIOS mode, then Windows setup creates a MBR partitioned disk.
