Dual Boot Problem

Hello all,

My computer came with windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. I just installed the Windows 8 preview in a 2nd partition. I am not able to boot back into Windows 7 even though all the files are there. When I go do msconfig or when I go to set the default OS in control panel, Windows 7 does not show up. All I see is windows 8.

I have tried advanced start up, but I don't get the option to set the default OS.

Thanks

William

Hi pillyg,

I would suggest following steps:

1. Download and install Visual BCD 0.9.3.1 in Win 8.

2. Start "Dual-boot Repair" utility from package. Click on "Automatic Repair". Confirm.
(this will fix boot environment as usually Windows 7 is added automatically to boot-menu when installing Windows 8)

3. Run Visual BCD Editor. Right click in left pane and select "Create missing Windows loaders" and confirm.
(this will scan and add every Windows installation on your computer if not already in BCD - so add your missing Windows 7 to BCD)

4. Reboot - you should have a dual-boot choice Win 7 and Win 8 (Win 8 will be default choice).

You can rename a loader (boot-menu) entry in Visual BCD Editor by selecting loader then F2 key and editing the text.

Post back to keep us informed of outcome and for further help if needed.
