Solved Can I upgrade to 10 without 8.1?

Ok, so I did a clean install of W8 Pro from an upgrade disc. On the 10" Eee pc this gave a resolution of 1024 x 600 meaning you can't use the metro apps. Although there is supposed to be a registry hack to solve this. However, have read that W10 supports 1024 x 600 and runs better on this machine.

So - can I upgrade/clean install Windows 10 now Windows 8 is activated - or do I need to upgrade to 8.1 first and get the icon to upgrade? Because I beleive it isn't possible to upgrade to 8.1 on this machine due to the screen resolution issue (even after the registry hack).

If I have to upgrade to 8.1 first, does anyone know how to do this with the screen resolution issue please?

I don't know about the hardware issues on Eee pcs, but I have certainly gone straight from Windows 8 to Windows 10 without Windows 8.1 in-between.

You would need to download a Windows 10 ISO file to do it.

In my case I did an upgrade install (by double-clicking the ISO to mount it) and then running setup.exe from there. There are now slicker ways with the later builds of Windows 10 to go direct to a clean install, but not sure if they work with Windows 8 - I think they would but not something I've tested personally.

You can clean install windows 10 - when asked for the product key - just choose skip....
Check the OEM website and see if they offer windows 10 drivers for that PC, download and save to USB, first..

You may also need a USB input device, until the touch drivers are loaded..

Thanks! So - if I burn an Iso of windows 10 and double click the Iso while Windows 8 is installed, I can upgrade that way and then do a clean install of it later once it is activated? I did try a clean install from USB but bottled out when I didn't see a 'skip' option. And then realised I had W10 Home Premium instead of Pro anyway (as the W8 is pro).

Will check out the Windows 10 forum - thanks. I think it sounds easier to upgrade to 10 than 8.1 on this machine - just wasn't sure if I needed 8.1 first.

I used the Media Creation Tool to upgrade our eeePC from Win 7 Starter to Win 10 Home and it is able to run Metro apps fine with the default resolution. You should have no problems using the MCT to perform a clean install.

You do not have to do an upgrade first... It will automatically read the Bios Key, so just clean install, unless you have files and apps you wish to carry over into windows 10, if so then upgrade the current OS

I believe (from spotting another thread) that the machine originally came with XP, so there won't be a BIOS key to read, and therefore the above approach won't work.

Thanks everyone! I have it running Windows 10 from a tutorial on Ten Forums. So installed Windows 8 and activated, then clean installed Windows 10 and used my Windows 8 product key to activate (via a technique on W10 forums). The only thing that confused me was there was no option to 'skip' on the product key page on installing W10 - just an option "I do not have a product code" - so I clicked on that and activated after installation.

I burned a new ISO to usb of Windows 10 - apparently it works with Windows 8 product keys now - the copy I had burned last year, didn't. But I didn't try entering the Windows 8 product key during install - used the way round it on the Ten Forums tutorial.

Anyway it seems to be running Windows 10 well and no resolution issues Which is bizarre as neither of our 'advanced' laptops at home are compatible with Windows 10.

If anyone else is having issues with an Eee PC 904HA (same motherboard as Eee 1000) then Windows 10 runs on it better than Windows 8 as it accepts the 1024 x 600 resolution. It also runs Windows 7 fine but I found it a bit sluggish with that on it.

Everything works fine on this machine on Windows 10. Windows installed all the drivers - no exclamation marks - and Cortana works as well.
