Dual boot setup boots straight into win 7

    Hello,

I bought a new SSD to test out win 8. I've installed win 8 RP onto it from a usb and everything worked fine.

Unfortunately after restarting the computer after setup, it boots straight into windows 7 without any dual booting options.

    Did I do something wrong?

Try booting win7, open an elevated command prompt.

To do that type cmd in start search box.

When the little black box pops up, rt click and select run as adminstrator.

Type in these commands ( replace d with the windows 8 drive letter as you see it from windows 7 )

    bcdboot d:\windows

    then press enter

    bcdedit /set {emssettings} bootems "Yes"

    then press enter

It depends on how you did the install. Did you disconnect the Windows 7 drive while installing Windows 8? If you did Windows 8 didn't know it was there and no dual boot would be setup. If that is the case use your BIOS boot options to boot from the SSD drive instaed of the other drive. Otherwise have a look at this.

Thanks, but I just fixed it by running a BCD repair tool.

Windows 8 is great so far!

Bought a used HP laptop that originally had Win7 Ultimate, and the previous owner had split the hard drive into two partitions and put Win8 Pro on the second partition. The boot up process is controlled by Win8 and you select at startup whether you want to go to Win7 or Win8. Pretty neat. BUT it...
This happened about two days ago. By going in chronological order: I used to have a dual-boot setup, a Windows 7 and Windows 8 on two different IDE 80GB hard drives, named Drive A and Drive B, respectively. Both of these hard drives are quite old, and I'm worried that it may be near the end of...
Hello, I have an HP Envy with Win8 pre-installed. I am trying to do a dual boot setup with windows 7, as some of the software I use daily, is not compatible with win8. The new software has yet to be released, and will not run in any compatibility modes. Knowing this is beating a dead horse,...
My laptop bootup stops at f1 setup or f2 load default screen and waits for my selection only when I previously shutdown from Windows 8. When I shutdown from Windows 7 the bootup is okay and continues through the select Windows 8 or Windows 7 screen. Windows 7 was already on my laptop c: drive...
