If you're sure that you have the correct edition and language, you could also see if you may be able to activate by phone.

You might also see if OPTION SIX in the tutorial below will show your embedded product key number.

    sorry not responded sooner.

Still showing default product key ending in D3VPT. Enter in the key tied to bios and won't except it.

can't find number to call for help... I had it somewhere!

For future reference, if all you did was use the Clean command from Diskpart, you can recover the drive. Using something like Partition Wizard will allow you to recover the partitions.

Even if I do that and it works, I still can't do a system restore without it asking for a dvd or usb image.

Are you using installation media that's the same edition and language that originally came preinstalled on the laptop?

Sorry, no I am not. Used the creation tool.

Never had to worry about having a legit key for a legit computer before with as many times as I have done this over the years.

If you like and when you have time, you might try downloading an ISO, create a USB, and use the USB to install from. Hopefully that'll work better for you.

Doing more research and I am fearing Asus neglected to add "with bing" which is not looking good at the moment.

I vaguely remember seeing Windows 8.1 with Bing in the system properties a few months back,
but had no clue that it was a version not supported for normal iso's.
I found a place to get it, downloaded copied it to a flash drive and I am now updating it.
    Thanks for your help guys.
