Solved Confused about interface.

I just did a completely clean install of W8 RP on a new system. So when it boots up there's this weird tile screen.

1. I know how to get to the desktop. You click the bottom left corner to switch between desktop and the full screen tile Start Menu. So I noticed there is an "All Apps" button on the bottom right of the tile menu. How do I make it so that All Apps automatically shows when I go into the tile Start Menu?

2. Is there a restart/shutdown button? The only way I was able to shut down was logging off, click the splash screen to enter the logon screen. Then there is a button there. But what about in Windows when you're already logged on?

3. IE and pretty much all of those apps that are there don't work. I'm getting an error telling me I can't run them if I'm logged on as Administrator. They want me to create a user. How do I override that?

(Ever since XP, Windows makes you create a user during setup. However, after installation, I immediately activate the Administrator, log on as Administrator, and delete the user account in Computer Management. The reason this is important is that in my experience, EVERYTHING runs alot smoother when you just have one user that is the Administrator. People who use Users sometimes run into errors, and have to log on or run as Administrator. There is absolutely no no point in hell for the added inconvenience of logging on as anything, but Administrator if I'm the only one using the computer.)

Also, why do they have to have a full screen Start Menu? In previous version since I think Windows 95, you just click the start menu on the bottom left, and it hovers over your desktop, and whatever you're doing without taking over the entire screen.

The only way I know of to get all of your apps to show on the start screen is to go to all apps, select them all by right clicking, and then pin them all to the start using the button that will appear in a bar along the bottom of the screen. However, you may find it convenient instead to launch your infrequently used apps by going to the start screen and typing the first letter or the first few letters of the app you want. You don't need to go to search first. It's very fast to do it this way -- quite a lot faster than scrolling through a lengthy Metro start screen. That way you can keep your start screen uncluttered by having only your frequently used apps there.

I think the restart question is pretty well answered elsewhere, but what you do is point your curser to the right bottom corner of the screen and select the settings charm

I'm not sure about IE, but for the rest of the apps, you have to have a user profile to log into the app -- that's how it knows which e-mail addresses and calendar to load, and who is doing the reviewing in the app store, etc. Once you create your user name, you can give it administrator privileges and delete any other user profiles from the pc settings app.

If anyone here knew why the start menu is on a full screen people would probably like windows 8 better. No one has an answer for this question.

Getting around in Windows 8

Go to this, read up on it. It's a basic navigation tutorial that will help.

The changes to Windows 8 are HUGE, nothing this big of a change since Windows 95. It's different, it's cool, it's faster and easier once you get used to it. I'd say it would take between 20 minutes to an hour learning how to use it, after that, it's smooth sailing!

One bit of advice, in the Desktop, you can pin items to the Start Screen and arrange the tiles around. To do that, right click on a Library or a folder or a hard drive, and from the context menu, hit Pin to Start. Then go to the Start Screen, and on the right hand side, the tile shortcut will be there.

Also, the tiles are part of the metro design concept Microsoft is pushing. By the fall, the Xbox, the Windows Phone 8, and the Windows 8 will be under the one UI to rule them all. Technically right now, two of three devices are one OS to rule them all...

OK I see. Thanks for all the advice. It was a little confusing, but now getting more of a handle on this interface. I still don't understand how to run some of these apps when logged on as Administrator. It just keeps giving me an error telling me it can't run using the build in administrator account. So how do I override that in order to avoid creating a useless user?

Fortunately, everything else I install works perfectly fine. Also, I don't really see myself using any of those apps anyway. Just wanted to know how to tweak it so that I don't get that absurd error. So far, I like W7 better. W8 doesn't seem any different aside from replacing the normal Start Menu with that full screen tile thing.

EDIT: Also, is there a hotkey for the desktop? When I hit the Start Menu button on my keyboard, it pulls up the full screen tile menu. Is there a way to set it so that when I hit that button, it takes me directly to the desktop?

Never mind. I found it thanks to the helpful link. It's the Windows Key + D to show desktop.

Thanks for the link. Ya I was already organizing tiles to pin to the main tile menu. As for huge difference, there doesn't seem to be any difference at all. Other than that tile interface for the Start Menu, everything else seems to operate exactly like W7. It's just like W7 with a desktop on top of the desktop.

Glad to see you're getting around better. You probably described 8 better than anyone I've read. It is a desktop (Metro) on top of a desktop. I dislike the mouse and I don't have a touch screen 0n my PC, so I found this thread extremely helpful: http://www.eightforums.com/general-discussion/2355-windows-eight-keyboard-shortcuts.html

I use the WinKey often to get to start screen. I found double pressing it switches back to last screen. Esc closes it. It also closes Charms bar, search, etc.

Another help is shutdown, restart, and cancel shutdown or restart (time configured) shortcut keys: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/7205-hybrid-shut-down-shortcut-create-windows-8-a.html Other tutorial links at the bottom of that tutorial. I'll be lQQking for a log off shortcut.

I hope this helps you as it did me.

Ya. I'm fine using the mouse, but if I need to get to the desktop, I just hit the logo key on my keyboard. However, since it doesn't take you to the desktop in W8, I just do the logo+D thing is OK for that. Otherwise, I'd just use the standard alt+tab.

So the link is saying that W8 has a faster bootup than W7? But what is that install for?

Hybrid boot is a feature in Windows 8 that makes startups and shut downs MUCH faster. It's enabled by default and it what it does is combine the Hibernate function that is in Windows with startup and shut down so the system doesn't have to reinitialize system files every time, but can just "hibernate" them. Hibernate function is still there in Windows 8 if you need to use.

The reason for Microsoft doing such was that many a desktop user doesn't generally use sleep or hibernate versus the mobile crowd that does. Those functions allow for faster startup, but people choose to shut down because they prefer it shut down. So, they took the non-commonly used Hibernate function, threw it with startup and shutdown and you have Hybrid Boot!

It does take longer to startup when you hit Restart because everything get reinitialized, like a Windows 7 start up time. But in 8, it's a few seconds faster. I've disabled a few Automatic services that I don't use and gain a few seconds more speed.

Did you create the shutdown, restart, or sleep keyboard shortcuts then? I realize that you stated your basically mostly a mouse user. Is that correct? Are you able to navigate around in 8 pretty well?
