Most probably, your netbook has hardware that Windows 8 doesn't support yet, or there was an error installing the software. Re-install Windows 8 and see if it works. If not, wait for updates :S

What is the netbook model and what specs does it have? It may have insufficient hardware resources to run windows 8

It might be the graphics driver of RT. I am having all kinds of problems with it too. Those problems were not present in the CP version. Maybe you want to try to install the CP version for a test.

When you installed the CP version, did you have the same problems?

Btw: I now run Win8 in Virtual Box. That is smoother. It is sufficient for testing but would not qualify for a serious production system. I also have 1 version that runs from a USB3 stick. That is really fun but has a few restrictions. Advantage is that you can run it on any system with a USB3 port.

Ye I have tried that on my HP laptop but wouldn't work??? Any chance you could message me what I have to download and do to get it to run on a oracle vm virtual box or any others???

Thanks

Chris - exactly how are you installing Windows 8 onto your Asus netbook?

The Asus comes with Windows 7 Starter - are you just running the installation as an upgrade from a downloaded .iso, or using a USB with the install setup installed on it?

If you 'upgrade', you better image the OS that is on the system right now because it will be lost. And maybe you want to go back to it if you decide that Windows 8 is not all that great.

ok, it does not work that way, I think everyone will agree. Time to do it a different way. Go and download the .iso and we'll work from there.

Another question - is the netbook still working OK? Have all the failed upgrades rolled back to leave you with an undamaged Windows 7 system?

Assuming you have the iso file downloaded onto the netbook, you might wish to keep the Windows 7 system it has already for the time being, in case Windows 8 is unworkable.

Because of screen resolution, Metro does not work well on netbooks.

You either need a USB external disk - a hard disk or reasonably fast Thumbdrive of greater than 16GB - a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer blade is workable - OR you need to make a partition on your hard drive of size greater than 20 GB.

Do this from Windows 7 on the netbook:

Assuming partitioning is needed, search diskmgmt.msc to open the disk management console

I don't know how your ASUS is set up, but there will probably be a hidden recovery partition of about 13 GB, an System Reserved partition of about 100MB, and a main Windows 7 boot partition filling the remainder of the 320GB disk.

If it is like this you need to shrink the main partition - select it, and right click and shrink volume - you need to shrink space by about 24000MB to give a working size for Windows 8 - create an extended partition and a logical partition within that for your new installation. This needs to be formatted to NTFS and given a drive letter.

ISO files are not mounted natively by Windows 7 - you may need to get something like Elby CloneDrive elby Free Software to enable you to mount the Windows 8 Install iso on the netbook as a BD_ROM drive.

Once Mounted, the important file is in the \sources folder called install.wim

The following is done from an elevated command prompt

For this example the BD_ROM Drive letter is d: and the Drive you plan to install windows 8 on is T:

dism /apply-image /imagefile:d:\sources\install.wim /index:1 /applydir:T:\

On a hard disk the time is about 20 minutes, on a thumbdrive, over an hour is normal.

Once the application reaches 100% successfully and returns to the command prompt, type

bcdboot T:\Windows /s c:

This adds an entry to the Windows 7 boot manager to dual boot to windows 8 - text mode boot menu - best not to change to the Windows 8 boot manager yet.

This is an interesting problem...

Tell us if the VM system works, because I suspect a bad disc...

You need to update the BIOS of the netbook that will support the W8. This issue has a thread in Windows 8 NEWS.
