Clean install will not create partition

I am doing a clean install of 8.1 onto a WD 1TB hdd. Using UEFI dvd in port 1 and hdd in port 0. Everything appears normal until the hdd shows unallocated space of 931.5 GB. I select 'new' and want to begin setting up four partitions: Recovery, System, MSR, and Primary. I selected a size of 20,000 MB for Recovery. Soon error msg says it can not create new partition code 0x80070017...sometimes 0x80070057.

    Welcome to the forum,

Instead of creating them yourself, have you tried just letting windows create them?

Steps 6,7 and 8 in the tutorial above point out what you should see if you do it that way.

    Hello Ifh003!

Most of the partitions would create themselves automatically. Recovery would most times not be even visible in Disk Management.

Try installing your OS on, let's say, a 100GB partition, which should be plenty. Everything else should happen automatically.

If you receive the errors again, they could be referring to bad media. In that case recreate the installation media onto a USB device and try again.

    Good luck!

    derekimo & CKWD,
Thank you for the fast response to my thread. I will print out the instructions/tutorial and see what can happen. My daily work is interfering with setting up the new computer. I have built four machines in the last seven years (all with WD hdd and Gigabyte mobo) and have never had a single issue with the install...until 8.1. On the Internet, this issue seems to be causing a lot of chatter. Thank you all, again.

    Additional info

Thank you ten thousand times for the tutorial about installing 8.1 hasn't worked yet. I did get to step 7 this time. After about 10 minutes, an error window opened: "We couildn't create a new partition.[error 0x85bcba40]. The 1TB hdd is showing only the Drive 0, unallocated space. 931.5 GB. Google does not return results for the error code. Your help is very appreciated.
    P.S.!! I have partition 1; 300MB Recovery...partition 2; 99 MB System...then drive 0 unallocated space 931.1 GB.
I could hit 'new' again...what do you think? Format is greyed out.

I would start over with creating a new installer. Deleting all partitions again.

I would agree something went wrong with the installation. Recreate the installation media, I would suggest thumb drive.

    Create installation media for Windows8.1:

You could also reset the BIOS before that, just in case because you already tried setting the OS a few times so try and start as fresh as possible. Carefully pull the CMOS for about 15-20 seconds then put it back on place. Then press the power button of the PC for 15 seconds to discharge any remaining power stored in the capacitors. By discharging the power, the CMOS memory will reset, therefor should reset the BIOS. Then try again and do the installation.

I also have to ask, is the WD drive new or old, is it working properly? Do you have access to another system so that you could check it's health, if needed? It is supposed to show as 931,5GB capacity if it's 1TB, thatís so.

It's a rainy day in Atlanta, and I am feeling dismal...after trying to install for the third time, I will now do as CK_WD offers. I will remove the battery and follow the reset advice. The hdd is brand new...everything is new. The dvd is OEM, 8.1 64-bit. I will get back to you soon.

Here's my story and I'm stickin' with it. I followed CK_WD suggestion...removed battery, etc. Then, using my other computer (Win7Pro), I made a USB install. There is no good news to report. As usual, at the point of clicking 'new' and 'apply', only Recovery and System partitions are created. Now what?

Oh, Happy Day! A ray of sunlight has burst upon the scene (the rain is slacking off in Atlanta). As we all know, troubleshooting gives way to exasperation and that leads to replacing parts one at a time. Fortunately, I have two hdd's in the Win7Pro. The extra WD Blue is 500GB with no real data on board...soooo, I placed it in the new machine and now I have a running 8.1 Pro OS.
I noticed this: with the defected hdd, often the error code (although not really explained while on-line searching) indicated a CRC error. I's sure you guys are experienced to know what that means, so do I. Also, the amount of time for the unallocated space to become Recovery, System, etc, was very long on the bad hdd. The 500GB hdd took a very short time to produce the four partitions.
Thank you derekimo and CK_WD for responding. Thank you for giving your time and encouragement to me.
