HDD system image to DVD system image

Hi, when I had windows 8, I could not create a system image of windows 8 on a DVD set (it ALWAYS failed, would format disk then throw up errors) so was forced to back it up on an external hard drive, which I now want to reuse. Is there a way to convert and split a hard drive system image (which is a single massive backup file) to a usable multi-DVD system image? My main extremal hard drive is getting more and more prone to failing and throwing up errors, and I need to reuse the other external hard drive for some of the important files on my hard drive.
Thank you

Then why not copy the image to a USB stick. They're available all the way up to 128GB these days -- and you probably need a lot less space than that.

A 128GB USB stick would cost ranging from $30 ~ $60. A 500HD would cost around $40 ~ $50.
IMHO, you'd better be off getting a 500GB HD for backup purpose. It is a lot faster to backup and restore.
Sure, there is a way to split the image into a small chunks such as free File Splitter and Joiner Download - Softpedia so you can split them in any size you want and burn to multiple DVD's but if you accidentally scratch one of them then there goes your backup.

Would that splitter app split the file up in such a way that the split files on the DVDs would be able to be used as a system image from the DVDs, or would it have to be reassembled?

It would have to be reassembled (thus the Splitter / Joiner) in the provided link.

How big is the backup image? Mine is 40GB compressed so it would take 10 regular DVDs or 5 Dual Layer DVDs (if you have a Dual Layer DVD burner). Slow, cumbersome and prone to failure.

Definitely better to use a flash drive or better yet, get a new external hard drive. a 1TB Samsung Canvio is around $50.
