Windows won't update after a system reset?

Okay so first off, I have an HP Pavillion g6 Notebook PC with a 672 GB hard drive. I believe it is around three years old now. Until this past Friday, I was running Windows 8.1 on it, now its running Windows 8.

This is going to be kind of a long post, but I think all of the info is relevant to my problem.

Over the course of the past few months I'd occasionally have start up issues after updates installed. I'd shut down the computer and it would install updates; but when I'd turn it back on it would get stuck on the screen with the hp logo and the spinning ball (or whatever its called). I always ended up having to just manually hold the power button down and shut it down that way. I think I even let it go for an hour once before resorting to holding down the power button to turn it off. When I would shut it down this way, it would get stuck on the hp screen again when I'd turn it back on. I had to restart it while button mashing F8 to get to "Troubleshoot" and from there I think I usually did a "Startup Repair" and that would make it start normally again from what I remember.

However, this last time Windows installed updates and I went through the whole process again, the startup repair didn't work, and I ended up trying a system restore, which didn't work either, so after that I tried a system refresh (while keeping all my files). After installing updates, I attempted to upgrade to Windows 8.1, which failed, giving me this message:

"Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101-0x40017"

Anyways, along with not upgrading to 8.1, my laptop was running incredibly slow, so I just did a full system reset. So here I am now, after waiting about seven hours for it to reset. Things seem to be running okay for now. Mind you, sometimes CPU, Disk, or Memory usage will shoot up around 85-100% when I'm doing absolutelty NOTHING to warrant it, and then the fan starts running like its trying to put out the fires of hell--this is really annoying. Processes in particular that are using lots of resources are Windows Modules Installer Worker (TiWorker.exe) and Host Process for Windows Services (svchost.exe). I'm not really sure what what either of those do, but I don't remember my Laptop running this hard when I got it. But the main issue I'm facing now is that Windows won't update. Whenever I go to Windows Update it tells me to "Restart your PC to finish installing updates". I've restarted it around four times now. Mind you, one time 15 updates did install, but its still saying to restart for updates to finish and also, there's no way those were all the updates (I did a reset, there should be way more).

Based on the information I've given, what do you guys think the problem is and how do I solve it? I want Windows 8.1 back on my Laptop, and I don't feel comfortable using it if there are 100+ updates that need installed. If you need more information, let me know.

Also, before anyone offers any suggestions, you should know, I'm not that familiar with the BIOS or Secure Boot or any of this stuff. If I'm gonna be going deep into the system to do some serious troubleshooting, I'm going to need some serious guidance, cause I have no idea what I'm looking for in there. This isn't really my thing, so please give detailed instructions.

Finally, what should I do if my computer gets stuck on the hp screen again? Is holding the power button down my only option at that point? Please answer this, I rarely see anyone address this question.

That's pretty much it. I know this is a long post, but I wanted to be detailed. Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Hello Dark786, and welcome to Eight Forums. :)

If you like, you could download an official Windows 8.1 ISO file using OPTION ONE in the tutorial below.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

Afterwards, you could create a USB from the ISO, and do a clean install of Windows 8.1.

Thank you for the reply, Brink. At the moment, my Laptop seems to be fixed. I couldn't upgrade to Windows 8.1, but I upgraded to Windows 10 perfectly fine without any complications. At first I ran into some issues with high Disk usage, but I disabled Superfretch and something else (can't recall the name) and that solved that.

The real test will be when Windows installs updates, if I run into all kinds of issues again I think I'm just going to buy a new Laptop, or take this one to Best Buy and have them look at it.

I'm currently running into an issue where my laptop will run fine and stay at reasonable temperature if its running on the battery, but when I plug in the power supply, it heats up and the fan starts running hard over nearly everything I do. If you have any suggestions for how to fix this problem, let me know.
