Scared and Very Confused - Windows 10

When I received the "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" in File Explorer, I hid it because I'm not ready or even certain I want to install "10". Just a few days ago I started getting pop-ups on my desk top re "10". The first one said "Your Free Windows 10 upgrade is ready! You're good to go. Schedule your free update". I've received a couple more but with slightly different verbiage. I've read where some people have had Windows 10 start downloading by itself, they didn't initiate the download, it just started. Is there a site on the computer that I can check to see if this is actually downloading? And, if it is, how do I stop it? I'm actually leaning more and more to not installing Windows 10. I'm satisfied with Windows 8.1 and actually I don't to much on my notebook.....just e-mails, pay bills, play games, read articles, and a few other easy things to do.

When I do make a decision not to install Windows 10, how to I permanently get rid of the reserve, GWX (or whatever the correct term is), the "upgrade to Windows 10 Home" that I've hidden and anything else that has to do with "10".

    Thank you.

You could set Windows Update to notify you before downloading updates.
Then when the Windows 10 download is available you can right click it & hide it.

if you un-hide your system files - you will find windows 10 is already on your hard drive
if you check your windows updates history - you will find the update has failed several times already..

This has been an on going issue - many claim it does not download or try to install without your permission..

You must disable GWX.exe services/processes from within task manager
You must rename GWX folder in system32 and syswow64
you must go into windows updates and right click the update and select Hide

you must delete $Windows.~BT folder (and / if) $Windows.~WS folder

KYHI, thank you for your reply and I'm sorry for the lateness of this post. I'm slightly embarrassed for asking you this, but where do I find the instructions on how to do the disabling for the above functions?

By the way, I checked my windows update history and it doesn't show that it has been trying to update and failed. I did hide the "Windows 10 Upgrade for Home" is ready download notice that I received in Control Panel (or something to that effect)........I'm assuming that stopped the download/updating.

    Thanks for your help.

All I know is I unreserved it & Windows Update won't download or install anything without my permission.
    For me it is gone.

Hey KYHI, I did all that and still when I go to Update, it shows that 10 is ready and that I need to reboot. I've also removed several upgrades. I removed KB3035583, KB2952664, KB2976978, KB3021917, KB3044374, KB2990214. Which didn't change anything. If I reboot, it looks like 10 will be installed again. Been there, done that. Thankfully I had a drive image from before 10 forced me to install. So I was able to go back to 8.1

    Any other info?
    TIA

Sorry, I have no control over how MS is forcing the upgrade upon everybody... I already upgraded to 10, removed windows 10 because to many problems or issues, so I clean installed windows 8.1, Blocked GWX and so on..

Here are the latest results.. Notice MS has it as an Important Update !! What The ?? Really..
Important to who ?? Not me or many other windows users...

Removing all the updates pertaining to 10 was a waste of time. Unregistering was a waste of time. Scripts were a waste of time. I just got a popup notifying me that it would install in 59 minutes. I pushed it off for a couple more days. &^$* you Microsoft.

I'm really beginning to think that Linux is the way to go.
