Scared and Very Confused - Windows 10

When I received the "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" in File Explorer, I hid it because I'm not ready or even certain I want to install "10". Just a few days ago I started getting pop-ups on my desk top re "10". The first one said "Your Free Windows 10 upgrade is ready! You're good to go. Schedule your free update". I've received a couple more but with slightly different verbiage. I've read where some people have had Windows 10 start downloading by itself, they didn't initiate the download, it just started. Is there a site on the computer that I can check to see if this is actually downloading? And, if it is, how do I stop it? I'm actually leaning more and more to not installing Windows 10. I'm satisfied with Windows 8.1 and actually I don't to much on my notebook.....just e-mails, pay bills, play games, read articles, and a few other easy things to do.

When I do make a decision not to install Windows 10, how to I permanently get rid of the reserve, GWX (or whatever the correct term is), the "upgrade to Windows 10 Home" that I've hidden and anything else that has to do with "10".

Thank you.

if you un-hide your system files - you will find windows 10 is already on your hard drive
if you check your windows updates history - you will find the update has failed several times already..

This has been an on going issue - many claim it does not download or try to install without your permission..

You must disable GWX.exe services/processes from within task manager
You must rename GWX folder in system32 and syswow64
you must go into windows updates and right click the update and select Hide

you must delete $Windows.~BT folder (and / if) $Windows.~WS folder

KYHI, thank you for your reply and I'm sorry for the lateness of this post. I'm slightly embarrassed for asking you this, but where do I find the instructions on how to do the disabling for the above functions?

By the way, I checked my windows update history and it doesn't show that it has been trying to update and failed. I did hide the "Windows 10 Upgrade for Home" is ready download notice that I received in Control Panel (or something to that effect)........I'm assuming that stopped the download/updating.

Thanks for your help.

Hey KYHI, I did all that and still when I go to Update, it shows that 10 is ready and that I need to reboot. I've also removed several upgrades. I removed KB3035583, KB2952664, KB2976978, KB3021917, KB3044374, KB2990214. Which didn't change anything. If I reboot, it looks like 10 will be installed again. Been there, done that. Thankfully I had a drive image from before 10 forced me to install. So I was able to go back to 8.1

Any other info?

Sorry, I have no control over how MS is forcing the upgrade upon everybody... I already upgraded to 10, removed windows 10 because to many problems or issues, so I clean installed windows 8.1, Blocked GWX and so on..

Here are the latest results.. Notice MS has it as an Important Update !! What The ?? Really..
Important to who ?? Not me or many other windows users...

Removing all the updates pertaining to 10 was a waste of time. Unregistering was a waste of time. Scripts were a waste of time. I just got a popup notifying me that it would install in 59 minutes. I pushed it off for a couple more days. &^$* you Microsoft.

I'm really beginning to think that Linux is the way to go.

Well that worked for me, for the time being anyway. I can't find anywhere in the update history where it had tried to install previously I had deleted two updates don't remember which ones. 10 had come up in the updates but I hide it. I did have the BT & WS folders so it must have been downloaded?
For me on this 3 + years old Asus Gaming Notebook I don't game so I don't see any advantage to upgrading and lots of hassles to get hardware working correctly so I don't want to upgrade it.

Thanks for the reply. I finally found the BT folder. Don't see the WS folder anywhere. Problem is, I can't delete multiple files in said folder. I've taken ownership (supposedly of main folder and all files). My account is Administrator. Still can't delete the files.

The horror, the horror. I've been trying to delete the BT folder. I've been having to take ownership of each and every file plus the folder it's in. That's going to take untold hours. Anyone have a batch file that would work?

TIA

In either a elevated command prompt or Windows Powershell type:

takeown /F folderpath /R

Folder path is the path to the folder you are working in. The /R switch will make it recursive and give you ownership of every file within that folder.

EDIT:

You will have to place quotations around the folder path to make it work correctly. So say I want to take ownership of all files in the SYSWOW64 folder, I would type:

takeown /F "C:\Windows\SysWOW64" /R

That would give me ownership of every file in and every subfolder in SysWOWS64. Dont actually take ownership of that folder, it was just an example. Would cause some big issues if you did. ;)

For me, the problem has been solved. It was a tedious process that took about 3hrs. But it's done. The BT folder and everything that was in it, gone. I hid the relevant updates and set Windows Update to notify, not to download/install. Update now shows that I can download/install 10, I don't think so. :geek:

KYHI- Thank you so much for these instructions I feel a lot better knowing that there are steps that can be taken after MS recently tried to install Win 10 on my Win 7 computer without my permission. I followed the steps which you outlined as best as I could in that I have deleted the $Windows.~BT folder and renamed the GWX System 32 folder so far.

Unfortunately I have not been able to locate and disable the GTX service located in task manager under services. I have also searched and I can not find the GTX folder in syswow64. Since the Win 10 update attempted to install without my knowledge or consent I have no way of hiding it since it failed.

My question is have I done enough to prevent the Win 10 update from making yet another unsolicited attempt to install on my Win 7 computer?

Hey KYHI, I did all that and still when I go to Update, it shows that 10 is ready and that I need to reboot. I've also removed several upgrades. I removed KB3035583, KB2952664, KB2976978, KB3021917, KB3044374, KB2990214. Which didn't change anything. If I reboot, it looks like 10 will be installed again.
TIA

I found out that even though you uninstall KB3035583 it still leaves the GWX folder which contains the Win 10 installer in Syatems 32.

Great news for all who want to wait / do not want W10!!!!

In Windows Update go to Optional and mark W10 upgrade as Hidden. Decide what updates you want to install Important or Optional and click install. The W10 upgrade will show but the selected updates will be installed. After installation of your updates the W10 upgrade window should close and show your updates as installed. If W10 Upgrade window still shows just close main Windows Update window. You will have to mark W10 upgrade as Hidden each time you want to install any updates.

We just need MS to sort out its coding mess now so that nobody need be confused in the future

I renamed the GWX folder in system32 and now I can not locate it under it's new name. At the time I did not know that I should have taken ownership of the file before I renamed it. Where do I now stand with regards to the GWX folder?

I also found...

Microsoft-Windows-GWX-Ins%4Operational

C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs

I am wondering what significance this has and what to do (if anything) with it?
