I also posted this in TenForums.

I have a Windows 8.1 Pro workstation that I do all my work on. The company I work with says they will not support Windows 10.

As far as I remember, I never asked to have this machine to upgrade to 10, but I noticed in the Action Center - Reliability history that starting on Aug 2 it has a warning that it Failed to Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro everyday.

------------
Description
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80240020: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.
------------

How do I make it stop trying to update? I did upgrade a laptop. Is it tied to my MS User Account some how?

It may download the update automatically but you have to tell it to install Windows 10. It will not update (install) Windows 10 without your explicit consent.

I tried the methods outlined in the other thread. Which I thought worked, but it just downloaded and tried to install again last night. It always seems to actually fail the install so maybe I will just have to ignore the failure message. Here is what is placed in event log:

If you want to prevent Windows Update to install Windows 10, go to Windows Update and view optional updates, then click on Windows 10 as an update and look on the right side menu options for that specific Windows 10 Update and then you will see a link that says like ''Hide this update'', click on that and the Windows Update will disable the Windows 10 Update! :)

How do I make it stop trying to update?

I had/have the same problem - multiple attempts to get approval to update, even after hiding the update in Windows Update and having it reappear "later". Each time I refused to update and automatic update-scheduling hit, that error would appear in the event logs. I got used to it being there and simply consider it to be an irritation rather than the result of an actual update.

However, there is a DIFFERENT type of scheduled update of Windows 10 that you should be aware of and I currently need a fix for - I never said "Go ahead, install Windows 10" on the Windows Update page of Control Panel - just the opposite. But some manner of mistake on my part (or something) did the equivalent of that and a pale-blue-surround dialog box popped up on my monitor saying something like "The Update is ready to be installed! Do it now or schedule for the future?" without having any overt means to say "No, don't do either". And the GWX icon in the systray essentially said something similar.

I have a different thread asking about a solution to this.

Your problem, however, looks like what I used to have and is apparently simply the result of NOT approving the install of the Windows 10 Upgrade "update" in Control Panel's Windows Update screen.
