installing Windows 8 release version on other harddrive

hi guys,

want to install the Release version on another SSD, but starting from my external harddrive or again from my USB stick, I feel that once again my Win 8 Consumer Preview will be overwritten.

Why is it impossible to choose on which drive this has to go and how can I arrange it to make a dual boot?

Maybe booting from the USB? Anyway I will not take that risk either

A fast way to install the Release version on another disk would probably be: remove the Revodrive, install the Release on the Foremay, put back in the Revo, but not for right now.

The system reserved partition is on the Foremay, so this should work.

thanks

jeff

Use the Windows To Go method of installation - it works on any target disk and you specify exactly the location that the Windows 8 image is applied to in the command

imagex /apply D:\sources\install.wim 1 T:

where D: is the DVD drive where the HRC_CCSA_X86FRE_EN-US_DV5 volume, Windows8-ReleasePreview-32bit-English.iso is mounted, and T: is the target drive for the new Windows 8 RP installation.

It will not overwrite or damage a system on another partition, unless you specify that partition in your command.

If installing to a fixed disk, and you want a multiboot window, and if you run Windows 7, and wish to be cautious by not installing the bootloader files from Windows 8, instead of BCDBOOT, just restart from the windows 7 setup DVD, and startup repair the installation Startup Repair - Windows 7 Forums to add Windows 8 RP to the Windows 7 dual boot menu.

See the tutorial by whs for full details

hi Fafhrd,

no, I want Win8 release on another drive then where Win8 Consumer is on. I do not use a DVD or Win7 for myself (just info here).

So not on another partition on the same drive.

thanks

Jeffrys - see the tutorial by whs regarding imagex. I shouldn't have used "Partition" I should have said "volume" which can be either partition or hard drive or SSD or USB flash drive.

Well Fafhrd, it seems a lot of work to do.

I installed Win 8 via Iso to usb instead of all the work in the tutorial.

So I do not find this a good idea.

The only thing I need is to get Windows8 on another disk and I do not know if this is possible with WIn 8 Consumer installed.

sorry but thanks for your effort

Jeff

Yes, iit is possible.

The method fafhrd mentioned is not actually a windows to go method , it is not new with win8 - I have been installing windows nt6 like that for years- similar to the way deployments are done.

I do it so often, that I have a batch file which saves the bother of typing commands..

hi Siw2, can you sent it to me please?

or post it overhere, I guess others could use it too.

but it is ok if not.

Maybe I just will install the Release over the Consumer version, next week sunday when I have more time.

thanks

jeff

well I tried just now, but sill Imagex is not recognized , although WAIK is installed

sorry

Jeff

(I think this was a crossposting, so I have answered it where it should have been - no probs)

Hi Jeff, first search the WAIK folder for imagex.exe. I have not got access at the moment but I think it might be in a folder like PETools, but search by typing into the start screen and it should be found. Once you have found it the best way to have imagex accessible on your system path at all times, is to copy it into your c:\windows\system32 folder. The, whenever you might need it open a command prompt as admin and just run the command I gave earlier, modified to suit your needs.

Best of luck.

ok Fafhrd,

I did bite the bullet and installes via Imagex. Took about 7 minutes, but I hope everything is alright.

Need to wait until next week before I do a shutdown to see if everything is ok.

Or can I check this out wihout restarting?

moving the Imagex file to Program Files AND running the command as administrator did the trick.

If this is ok, then that is a powerfull command.

thanks

Jeff

Sounds good - cannot complain at a 7 minute install, can you? I am glad you got it together.

I agree that Imagex.exe is a very powerful tool, alongside others such as diskpart, net, fsutil, and dism etc.

I don't quite understand about the shutdown - is this the host system that you have to wait to shutdown? If so, I hope all goes well with your bootup of the new Windows 8 system.

Conundrum. I have installed Release Preview twice. First time using Custom instal to create a dual boot system which did NOT appear in the dual boot options and hence was inaccessible. Second time I inadvetently overwrote my C: drive Winows 7 installation. Windows 7 was recovered by Acronis back up, and works as before. Both times, Windows 8 installation worked ok. NOW on trying to install in a different partition it reports that my CPU is not compatible with windows 8 .... no Hardware has been changed! Any ideas on this?

I don't quite understand about the shutdown - is this the host system that you have to wait to shutdown? If so, I hope all goes well with your bootup of the new Windows 8 system.

Well on the C: drive there was Win7 on the K:drive Win8 Developer. Now I only have on the K: drive Win8 Consumer, but the system reserved partition is still on the C: drive. Since I want both Consumer and Release I asked for help and thanks to you and others Fafhrd I could install via Imagex and will use this again.

I am afraid to shutdown and restart, not knowing if I can boot properly.

I really need this computer to work right now, so I will wait for reboot until next Thursday when I am back from France.

even do not allow updates right now, since a restart could be triggered.

Thanks for all of your help

Jeff
