Solved Release preview activation problems

I've just installed Windows 8 Release Preview, all is well except I can't activate it to personalize it. I keep getting a security error 0x80072F8F. I've searched around a bit and some said it was to do with time zones and regions settings. Mine are all fine, and I still can't activate. Has anybody had this problem and been able to solve it? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there
Did you run W8 install from INSIDE an existing OS (W7 / W8 or even XP for the 32 bit version) or did you boot from external media to install it.

If you run from an existing OS you are likely to run into trouble.
Create bootable media, boot from that -- delete the existing Win partition when you get the prompts and install.

Have the serial number handy BEFORE you start -- it's annoying to have not taken it and wiped your disk so no internet to retrieve the number from MS -- luckily I still had a smart phone to get the number from the MS site.

On booting from the install media the first thing you get is a prompt for the serial number -- this fixes all the activation stuff so you shouldn't get issues with that later.

Final thing -- might be stupid but check the date in the BIOS -- batteries do get used up and the date could be totally hosed up -- outside the W8 validity period too. Unlikely but it's no harm in checking next time you boot.

Thanks for the reply. I've installed it from media onto a different partition of it's own. I have had Consumer Preview before with no problems, and so far, this is the only issue with this release. Everything else is working fine.

Hi there
you actually don't (or shouldn't) need to activate W8 RP -- it's already activated and valid until middle of Jan 2013.

I thought you need to use the activation key which was provided to install RP.
