Refresh was an absolute disaster for me - it basically ruined my computer.
After the "refresh," on my next restart, the message was " please wait while Microsoft installs 163 updates."

That update process took my computer 8 hours to complete.
Now it freezes constantly, every program starts with a "no response" message, then takes 1-2 minutes to open.
Browser freezes, programs crash, the refresh took an extra 30GB of space from my disc drive, and the Windows Store says that I cannot do a Windows 8.1 update - no explanation.

"Refresh" equals disaster. I´m assuming that I won´t be able to do a Windows 10 update as well.
I might as well use this computer as a paperweight after Windows "refresh."
I´m forced to switch to my MacBook Pro, which always performs flawlessly.

Goodbye Windows, goodbye Microsoft forever.

Understand your frustration, possible extra space is in a windows.old folder located in the C: Drive can be removed, you can also run Disk cleanup. Have a Widows 8 disc came with system, because i would try a clean custom install, even though have to contend with all those updates or try a reset instead. Could be reasons of missing system drivers for the laptop too or windows update causing this.

sparkie415, to answer your question, no, refresh is not the same a a Dell factory reset.

JDS 63 thanks so much - windows.old folder is 36GB of space that can be freed!

sfc/scannow, after "refresh", still finds corrupted system files which cannot be repaired.
These corrupted files were the reason I decided to do a "refresh" in the first place.

I have NO faith that if I do a full system re-stall of Windows 8, I will have a "clean" system that can be updated to Win 8.1 and Win 10.
But I guess I have no choice but to do the whole thing over again, only do a full re-install of the OS and the original factory settings.
That will get me a computer full of bloatware that takes hours to delete and clean up, plus the expected glitches and problems.

Microsoft seems adamant that you must be on Windows 8.1 to get a Windows 10 upgrade.
But what about customers with problems who can´t be updated to Win 8,1? I paid for a Windows laptop with Windows 8, and I´m screwed.

If you do not want the factory dell OS (windows 8 and dell bloatware) do not do a Reset..
go to the dell support website and download the drivers for your pc
download and create windows 8.1 setup media from the MS website > Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

perform a clean install of windows 8.1 and then install the dell drivers..
the 8.1 setup media will read your 8 key just as if it was an 8.1 key

Just do the important updates for now if you do a clean install or factory reset, there has been some issues with SFC integrity violations due to certain updates, but should not cause system instability with update KB3022345. Your welcome
