Windows 64 Problem

Hi.

I have windows 7 32 and i am trying to install windows 8 64. Trying to installation from auto start ''setup exe'' error come up saying. :

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you are running. Check your computers systerm information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and than contact the software publisher.

When trying to start instalation from Boot menu, goes straight to starting already installed windows 7.

I have checked, and my pc is more than capable of running 64 bit windows.

Any ideas what should i do ?

Is your install media bootable? Where did you get it and how did you create it?

Well It is on DVD so i guess it does make it bootable in the menu right ?

DVD you made or a Microsoft made DVD?

i did. Does that make difference ? on my laptop cd works normally, on the pc i am trying to install it doesnt work ..

Depends on what you mean by works normally? Auto run and bootable are two different things. Did you actually boot from it on your laptop? How did you create it? It won't work when running setup.exe because you can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit. You have to boot from it and do a clean install. If your laptop had a 64 bit install of Windows 7, setup.exe will work. You know you can't use the same product code on more than one PC right?

If it's a DVD, does the computer have a DVD drive or just a CD drive? I've been bitten by that several times.

Is your BIOS set to boot from the DVD before the hard drives? It sounds like this is not the case. If it is then there will still be a prompt during the boot asking if you want to boot from the DVD, I think it lasts 5 seconds and if you don't respond it will then boot from the hard drive.

On a lot of systems you can press a key during the power up so that it will then ask you which media to boot off, several of mine are F12, some are Esc, it depends upon the hardware.
I have a couple of UEFI systems. Getting these to remember to use the DVD drive first is problematic, if the system boots at anytime without a DVD in the drive then the boot order is switched to use the Windows Boot Manager first (until I edit the BIOS to put the DVD drive back, I think this is a hardware issue). So for these systems I always have to use F12 to boot the DVD.
