3rd attempt that's IT --Bye Bye and back to Consumer preview

    Hi there
I've had it with this --- MS seems really to have hosed it up. In addition to the security / lack of accessibility to YOUR OWN DISKS which I made in a previous post here are some other major irritants.

    1) Now Control Panel -- you have to enter a SEARCH to get what you want --you can't change the display from display by category to anything else --like say small icons so you are stuck with the "Idiots" Menu. I preferred the display by icons where you had the whole lot on one screen.

    2) Power options -- can't change the stupid default to NEVER on put the computer to sleep -- setting the advanced options to ZERO doesn't work either. Wants a Password on wakeup as well -- can't switch that off --- lovely idea when you are running a Virtual Server from the system !!!!!!. Whoever thought of that option should be the one to go out there and re-start all these machines when they awake from their "Enforced Slumbers" and type in passwords too. This is taking security to LUDICROUS extremes. There *might* be a registry fix for this but that's not an answer in my book for something people quite legitimately want to be able to set to suit them.

(Set to 1439 mins at least gives 23 hrs 59 mins but if you want a machine on 24 / 7 unattended then this isn't a real solution either and you still need a password on wakeup).

    3) Problems with some web sites on IE -- input forms don't work properly so I can't set some of the preferences on my multi-media streaming application - no Input boxes to enter the necessary data.

    4) Windows explorer(note not I.E) when you click ANYTHING starts from Libraries and is hideously slow --especially if you are looking for something on DISK Q for example.

Sorry MS --gave you a good go on this one -- Not touching it again until possibly an RTM test.

Windows Consumer preview worked more or less fine --why didn't you fix THOSE errors instead of trying to make the system so "Idiot proof" and security restricted that it's impossible to do ANYTHING without spending a load of time on it.

Note also we are probably far more experienced users than the average joe out there too. I can guarantee if the system works like this the average joe is going to be switching to Apple in DROVES. !!!

I'll still use the Consumer preview but IMO the release Preview has gone BACKWARDS a few lightyears in useability even if the install was quick and painless.

    Cheers

    Hey Jimbo,

I'm sorry to hear your experience with the RP has been so bad. I can't speak to all of your issues, but my Control Panel works as expected, and I can view it by Categories and/or large/small icons.

Windows Explorer seems to be ok for me also, if I open it using the Windows Key+E shortcut. It opens in the "Computer" view. If I click the shortcut in the Taskbar it does open in the Library view though. I don't have near as many drives as you do so it does seem fast enough to me.

    Best of luck to you...

    Hi there
since discovered source of problem -- although not what caused it initially.

Windows thought my internal "C" drive was a USB stick --how I don't know. However from considerable experience with running Windows to Go on various devices I know that when W8 thinks the Internal drive is a USB Stick (not a USB disk BTW) loads of "Updateable" things are locked.

Problem fixed by disconnecting all my drives - wiping the "C" drive and doing a totally fresh install. -- I also took the opportunity to use an SSD for the Windows partition.
Worked fine -- re-connected drives and all running OK.

BTW Windows to go on a USB DISK is fine -- you can update etc just like a "Normal" Windows installation too.

However last night I'd had enough -- but after a new Day with a few glasses of Beer and another attempt --finally got it working.

Never had the computer think the Internal OS drive was a USB stick before --that's a new one for me.

    Cheers

Couldn't boot from the DVD on this PC for some reason so I ended up trying to install from Windows 7. I wanted to setup a dual boot anyway but didn't get that option until I ran the setup again, this time from the sources folder.

I got a few "You don't have permission to access" prompts when trying access my documents, pictures, and videos folders on my data drive. Clicking "continue" let me in anyway and I didn't get any more prompts after that?

No problems switching to Large Icons in Control Panel for me.
Was able to set Sleep and Hibernate to never in power options too.

I had one web site prompt me that cookies weren't enabled when they were and wouldn't let go any father. The input fields didn't come up.

I had a couple of glitches with explorer were it just seemed to freeze. One or two not responding to. So far they seem to have gone away on there own. Windows update maybe, or a driver update, don't know for sure. The metro IE locked up on a blank window around the same time, don't know if its related. I use the desktop IE almost exclusively anyway. My VIA onboard sound was a pain to get working too.

I haven't near the problems you have but I have had a few WTF moments. I'd of bailed too if I had the sort of problems you are having. I had thought about downloading the ISO again and burning a new disk, but I got it installed the hard way. I shouldn't say this, I'm probably tempting fate, but my system seems to be pretty stable at the moment.

I also had a big problem with non access to certain disks and files thanks to RP screwing up lots of my permissions after install. I had to go through a lot of files and folders to restore permissions for myself to get access to my own files. I have no idea why RP would have altered the permissions of these in the first place. This RP does seem to be regression compared to CP on some levels.

I second that. I had never any problems with the CP and it was fast. This RP is a real pain. In vBox it works very slowly and in both vBox and an installation in a partition it keeps freezing. And the videos do not play correctly. Had to install VLC to get normal performance. I know there is a problem with the defauld Nvidea driver. But I have an ATI card. And ATI seems to have nothing for Win8 yet.

Only problem I see with the RP is, that it cannot load my math co-processor, and not enough information about it in Windows Devices to find a maker for it, this is on a laptop, so therefore can't just pop it open and look for a name on the math co-processor. *mutter*
