Windows 8.1 x64 on HP Workstations

Hi Folks:

I was wondering if anyone here has had experience on installing the 64-bit version of Windows 8.1 on either of these two HP Workstations: the xw8600 or the z600. I have a chance to obtain either model and while they are both non-UEFI machines, I understand that Windows 8.1 can indeed work on BIOS-only PCs. From what I understand, certain processor/hardware security features will be turned off but Windows will function. Is that correct?

Does anyone have any insight here? Any gotchas I need to watch out for? I love my xw8200, but I am unable to upgrade it to Windows 8.1 x64.

they need to have a 64bit processor and should have at least 4GB ram to run x64 OS

Bios or UEFI - not matter..

Well in that case, my xw8200 workstation should run it, but it doesn't. I am running the x64 version of Vista and it works. My processor can utilize PAE but that's not needed in an x64 environment. I don't think my Xeon CPUs utilize NX or SSE2.

Whenever I try to boot the installation DVD, I get a black screen error flash three times, and then the system restarts.

I read online that the xw8600 won't support Hyper-V, but that's not a deal breaker. I just want to make sure that the Duo Core CPUs on the xw8600 will support NX and SSE2. So I can't chance a vendor saying something like "Well if it runs 7 it should run 8,"

This is a concern since Windows 8.1 can be very different.

Runs fine on my dc 5800 with 4 Gb Ram at 64 bit and old style bios (Small Form Factor Model HP Compaq Business PC).

Well thanks for the input. I am going to look at picking up an xw8600 then. I may not wait until 2017 after all. :)
