    Upgrade or Fresh Install?

    Hey guys,
I just have a quick question regarding upgrading to a new version of Windows.

When upgrading your computer to the newest version of Windows, would you simply upgrade from your old version and bring across all your files and applications, or perform a fresh installation of the new version? I've heard that simply performing an upgrade can cause problems and bugs in the long run, but is this just a myth?

    Hello tech,
Yes, do an in-place upgrade may cause some bugs. If you want to keep your files and apps, then do an in-place upgrade. You can perform clean install if you want a new, fresh OS, make sure you have backup for your documents/pictures etc.

Note: You may notice performance increase after you do a clean installation.

I prefer a clean install when possible. I have run into issues after doing an upgrade install on more than one occasion. If you have a lot of software installed that you do not want to install again, an upgrade may be the way to go. I usually don't have all that much to reinstall so its not an issue for me.

Prefer fresh install so you do not import extraneous settings and registry entries. Just make sure you have copies of software to reinstall and then you'll know which are truly compatible or not. If installing Windows only, have link to mfr's OEM software for your computer too and just install the useful ones, not the bloatware that you never used or intend to use. Worth the additional time to have a fresh copy vs new version over old programs and settings.
