Hi,
my uncle asked me to repair/reinstall Windows 8 (64bit) for him because it doesn't boot anymore. So I downloaded an ISO and burned it on a DVD-RW with ImgBurn. So far so good. I checked if the files and folders on the DVD were burned properly. They look just like the last time. When I put the DVD in I changed the boot options in the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive. After it reboots there is just like an underscore in the upper left corner blinking. After a while the Windows 8 logo appears and the cycle starts spinning. Then I get the BSOD saying "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart" Then after a second or two something like this appears "Just wait while we collect some info and restart". I don't know if an error line popped up, too - it was too fast. I tried burning a second DVD-RW but it gave me the same error. When I put in the DVD in my own Laptop it didn't work, too. But it didn't give me a BSOD, but instead asked if I wanted to repair Windows or start normally. What can I do now?

Thanks in advance!

hmmm, DVD-RW that could well be your problem!! If you insist on using DVD use a DVD R- You should be using a USB Thumb Drive to install windows 8.1 don't waste your time trying to install 8 as you will only have to upgrade to 8.1 anyway. The 8.1 ISO is more likely to have drivers for your hardware that will work. If you are following the tutorials here on the forum you will understand that you need to install UEFI and how to make that happen.

I've tried using an USB already, but it didn't boot from it. That's why I went into the basement to find some DVDs, so I found like 4 used DVD-RWs. Yes, I'm actually installing 8.1. I will try again with USB now

My guess would be that your PC is trying to boot into Legacy mode ( thus the windows logo) and the BSOD is caused because your PC is UEFI..

Insert your windows 8.1 setup media and upon startup of the PC get into your boot menu (usually F12) and then select the UEFI USB device as your boot type..

Another way to force booting UEFI is to (Remove or Rename) the "BOOTMGR" file (example: bootmgr.old) within the setup media > this will kinda force the PC to use the BOOTMGR.EFI

I doubt my uncle's laptop has UEFI. It's like 5-7 years old already. I have a MAC so I used Terminal to burn the ISO on the USB. I tried RUFUS on a Windows PC, but it says that the ISO is not supported.

Well then it didn't come with Windows 8 as most if not all OEM window 8 computers are set up UEFI. Your problems are between BIOS MBR x86 And UEFI GPT x64 Bit. So you might find it easier to install window 7 on this older 5-7 years computer. Otherwise you might have to download the 32bit version of windows 8.1
