Windows 8.1 Disk Management for a New Hard Drive Not Worki

Hello, I've just gotten a new TB hard drive, installed it, and tried to partition it. I opened up the Windows Disk Management program and initialized the drive. Then I went to create a new partition (or whatever that process is called). I went through the wizard, selected how much storage I wanted on it (all of it) selected the letter drive it would be, and named it. Anyways, the program has decided to stop responding, and so I've been sitting here in 30 minutes of hope, but alas nothing has changed. I've already tried this, but the program stopped responding, so I had to stop it and that created a whole new slew of issues, and it took a while to start my computer up properly again. Anyways, what can I do? Should I close the partition program and download a third party one to format and partition the drive?

Thanks for any help!

That is rather strange. Normally disk management works quite well for that task. Was that disk initialized a MBR or GPT.

select disk # (# being the new disk number)

create partition primary
format quick fs=ntfs label="Name" (type in a name)

Thanks for your help, but I'm still lost. I've just looked up something on the Internet to see how diskpart works, and I don't think it's working the same for me. I search "cmd" right-click and open as administrator, however when I type "diskpart" and press Enter it doesn't allow me to type anything else in. It loads the diskpart batch or whatever it is, however after that it doesn't have the "DISKPART>" that I'm seeing in an image on another guide, and so I cannot type into it. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help so far!

No change. This is the screen I'm hit with, and I cannot type anything. I also edited out my computer name, hence the white box. CMD Diskpart Issue.png

Edit: Something finally came up. It would appear that there's just a huge lag between my entering commands, and them being executed. I'm not sure why, but pretty much this entire partition process, even when I was trying to use Windows Disk Management has been incredulously slow, with many stops inbetween. Thanks for your help!

that all looks correct and it should pull up the diskpart> prompt

Yeah, probably no need to hide my computer name, but I guess I'm just paranoid. Thanks for your help! I suppose that this will work if I wait long enough between each command.
