Trying to Image new Laptop onto external 500GB drive. Followed Windows Eight Tutorial Option 2. All went well, but the file created (WindowsImageBackup) is empty?
Please help.
Cheers,
Ken

Instead of using Windows Backup. It is much better to use Macrium and it's free:
Macrium Reflect Free

Reboot and run chkdsk /f on the drive to see if the file now has a size. Or better, use something like Image for Windows by TeraByte Unlimited which is much more straight forward and reliable.

The backup apps (MR, AOMEI) compress the backup and store it in a proprietary file format. You can't boot and run from that file -- if that is what you are asking. You can store that file on a USB stick, though.

please refer to post #2 and yes you can backup to USB as long as it is large enough

The size of your USB stick must be appr. 65% of the size of the data you are imaging.
