Clean install of windows 8.1 on new Lenovo Z50-70

I just purchased a Lenovo Z50-70 and want to remove the bloatware and perform a clean install. I was able to retrieve the product key using a key finder software but can't figure out how to go about performing this clean install.

I've downloaded a windows 8.1 ISO and put it on both a DVD and a USB flash drive and trying booting to both but I keep getting some message about cable being disconnected and it doesn't seem to process through.

The version of windows 8.1 is OEM 64-bit.

Also, I'm looking to upgrade to Windows 10 when it's available and I hear that it will be a free upgrade for at least a year, if not more. So, I'd like to make sure whatever I do now allows me to make the upgrade in the future.

Any help you guys can provide would be great!!!

Is it talking about the USB cable, look at page 5 in your manual or Google this in your browser:

This is the procedure for a clean install:

Don't think it's referring to my USB cable as the DVD player is built in and so is the USB port so no matter if I use a DVD or a Flash drive I'm getting the same message and it boots to the Lenovo screen and then Windows after.

Hi, the process you outlined to boot to USB or DVD is the exact process I followed and am still getting the message about the cable. I'll look at what the exact message is when I get home and post it here as I may not be providing all the details needed.

Hmm didn't realize the installer/ISO was Lenovo specific, if it is, then no I didn't download it from Lenovo website, I thought only the product key mattered. Is there a way to download from the Lenovo site? Do I need to order boot disks from Lenovo directly?

Hi

You can always clean install an OEM version of 8.1 unless the SKU is not one of the following.

1. Windows 8.1 with Bing

2. Windows 8.1 Single Language with Bing

All other editions can be clean installed by following the below steps.

1. Use "Media Creation Tool" to download and create install media matching to the SKU version installed on your PC. The ISO/USB reated with this tool will contain "Update 3" and can be used to clean install both OEM and retail versions.

2. Boot from the USB and it will auto detect the BIOS embedded 8.1 key if there is one. Simply continue the install as normally and activate when done.

Most Laptops come with 8.1 (core) and not 8.1 Pro so you have to download the same version. The ISO from the Media Creation Tool will use any 8 or 8.1 key and read it from the Bios if it is OEM.

Then I m downloading single language one now after I spoke to the customer care of Microsoft and they came on remote support accessed PC d tried activating licence. Prob s it doesn't read from bios. They asked me to download 8.1 single language now to refresh the system with it. Have a v poor broadband speed .

It's actually very simple mate. All you have to do is to check the system information summary and find the installed SKU version.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/32371-system-information-view-about-your-windows-8-pc.html

But if you already wiped the original OS and installed "Core" instead, it will be difficult to identify the edition.

If you download and install the correct version using "Media Creation Tool", you will be able to clean install for 100 % sure. I have did that dozens of time.

Hi, thank you so much!! This was extremely helpful.

However after successfully performing a clean install I'm seeing the following message (which I was encountering when I was initially trying to perform a clean install on my own):

Capture.JPG

Now I have yet to install any drivers so not sure doing so will take care of things. It does only stay on this error for about 2 to 3 seconds and boots to windows setup after.

Any thoughts?

Just figured it out. I had to change the boot sequence to boot from UEFI as it was set to Legacy to load the ISO from my flash drive.
