I recently purchased an Asus X751M laptop on eBay. When I got it turned on, it was having some startup issues. So, I went in and did the full factory reset. I have heard that this is only supposed to take 2 hrs at most...well I am 2 hours in and am only at 31%. Anyone ever heard of it taking 6-8 hours?

Also, what happens if you do a hard shut down while a factory reset is happening?

Thanks!

DO NOT shut it down, you may end up with nothing bootable and the factory reset not useable.

Let it finish. There have been posts of people taking 6-8 hours.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER interrupt a reset, recovery, update or system restore !! Walk away for a while, the % complete may even seem stuck but it does NOT mean it's not still running and may shoot up dramatically at any moment. Also, although it 's too late now, make sure the battery is fully charged when you start in case the power is interrupted which will also violate the NEVER INTERRUPT Rule.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER interrupt a reset, recovery, update or system restore !! Walk away for a while, the % complete indicator may even seem stuck but it does NOT mean it's not still running and may shoot up dramatically at any moment. For instance, running the Restore Health tool will stick at 20% for an hour or so and all of a sudden complete the process, And, although it 's too late now, make sure the battery is fully charged before you start in case the power is interrupted which will also violate the NEVER INTERRUPT Rule.

Thanks for the quick reply! I waited it out. It took a total of about 5 hours. Everything seems to be working as well as Windows 8 can run. Looking forward to trying to optimize it.

Take care!

There are Two options available after clicking Reset
one being > Keeping this PC < and the other > Wipe this PC <

Keeping this PC > does a Quick Format of the partitions - pretty fast to reset..
Wipe this PC > Zero's out the disk and then formats the partitions - verrrrry slow reset..
So if you got a 1TB drive, plan on going to bed..

10. Select how you want to have your personal files deleted in this current installation of Windows 8. (see screenshot below)

Note   Note
Just remove my files = Quick, but your files might be recoverable by someone else since they are only marked as deleted.

Fully clean the drive = Thorough, but this can take several hours since it does a secure erase to overwrite your files so that they can't be easily recovered.

Yeah, that's it...
But, I guess the dialog depends on which version of Windows 8 you are using..
Windows 8.1 being the most Current
