Hi, I have just installed windows 8 , previously running windows 7 by installing a new c: drive and in istalling from fresh. For this install I disconnected all of my storage drives, upon reconnecting them all seems ok but I noticed many volumes with rather strange numbers associated with them under disk management. Has anyone come across this before? The extra volumes seem to be on one of my storage drives f:

That does not look right. I would delete all those that are 100% free. Worst that can happen is that you have to reinstall.

Strange as it may seem - it looks like the disk was converted from mbr to gpt or visa-versa

and the win8 install was not a clean unformatted disk install

Thanks for the replies, I have deleted the extra partitions and all seems okay.

The win 8 os was installed onto a ssd which was formatted with windows 8 setup during the install, it previously had win7 on it from another machine, the os disk however was fine, no erroneous partitions it was the f: drive that had them.

The c: drive is gpt, as is the f: drive so yes the f: drive at some stage has been converted to gpt which is strange as I have not lost any data from it. All my other storage drives are still MBR.

For the most part data drives can be converted to GPT or from GPT to MBR it is just OS drives that can not be converted. As always back up your data before doing any disk opertations
