Did you already put the Windows install media on to the USB?

Two possible causes for that message..
You are using x86 software and it's trying to boot UEFI
Or the USB your setup files are on is not formatted Fat32

Unified Extensible Firmware Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Some PC's will not let you install in UEFI mode if the thumb drive is formatted in NTFS. It needs to be fat 32. The PXE stuff and the check cable message is because your laptop is going through all the boot options. One of them is to boot from the network, you never saw it before because your PC didn't get that far in the boot order list.
UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows I prefer option two.
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 8 with
Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

How did you create your install thumb drive? Is it actually bootable? Some PC's require the thumb drive to have an active partition set for it to be bootable. On my PC's formatting it in FAT 32 and just copying over the files isn't good enough, they won't boot from it. If you use the tool KYHI linked to and use it to create your thumb drive it should be UEFI compatible. It worked for me.
Option two here, using fdisk, UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows will create install media that is UEFI and legacy BIOS compatible. It's my preferred method as I have a laptop with UEFI and desktop PC's with legacy BIOS. I wouldn't rush to do the BIOS update. Flashing your BIOS will not make it UEFI if it isn't already, if that's what your thinking. As far as I know anyway.
