New 8.1 PC's boot to desktop

I installed a new HP all in one for a client about a month ago and when it boots up it goes to the desktop. A friend just installed a new Dell Inspiron 3000 and it too boots up to the desktop.

Must be something the PC vendors are doing??

A new install of 8.1 update boots to desktop automatically (the original 8.1 didn't). Unfortunately this is the best source I could find but it certainly fits my experience of clean installs on my non-touch laptop...

So no, not OEM, it is MS changing how the initial log on works. You can of course change it if you want.

Now, with Windows 8.1.1 new computers that donít have a touch screen should automatically boot into the familiar desktop screen

I don't know. There are probably lots of people who still use Windows 8. I miss the old start screen but there we are - gotta keep with the program...

Thanks for the info. Then the 8.1.1 works like Windows 10 is supposedly going to work.

is there any FREE software like start8 that provides classic shell menu but with "boot to desktop" option? thanks
I love Metro, but I think booting into it is worse for me than if the Start menu were hanging open everytime you booted 7. I have to say this is an additional step that makes it feel a bit forced, a bit in the user's face. Has anyone figured out how to go straight to the dekstop?
Hi there I'm waiting to see if this old hardy perennial will work on the new Windows 8.1 when booting directly to the desktop. You can currently bypass the Windows welcome screen at boot time quite simply (although on Win 8 it simply takes you immediately to the start screen). Simply do this...

I would also like to delete metro in it's entirety or at least as much as possible. Also, I have a dual monitor setup. On is my flatscreen tv, which is hooked up to the computer for home theater. I seem to have a duplicate task bar and icons on the tv, which I most certainly did not have on 7. ...
