How can I boot from a d.v.d. in Windows 8.1?

I have pressed F9 during boot up and that gets me to a screen on which I can supposedly go to a section in the UEFI which I can select with the + and - keys and then pressing Enter.

Although the F9 key works, the computer doesn't respond to either the + or - keys or the Enter key. It is as though the USB port into which the keyboard is plugged is not active.

The machine is an HP 110-412na.

I have written the Microsoft ISO to disc as per Fred Langa's item in the current Windows Secrets newsletter. Although I have removed all the non solicited software which was pre-installed I want to start from scratch with a new Microsoft only Windows.8.1

Thank you, but that doesn't work. The success of doing that depends on the USB port/s of the computer being active during boot. They're not.

If the F9 key works on boot up the USB port must be working. Try the up down arrow keys.

To use the embedded OEM product code you have to install the matching version. If Core was installed at the factory that's what you have to install. If you install Pro the OEM key will be rejected and vise versa. If it came with Pro and you install Core the key won't work.

I'm afraid that most of the information in your post and that in those links, means very little to me. What is Core?

Can I get rid of all traces of the existing installation, including the Recovery partition, get rid of the embedded OEM key, or ignore it, and install a retail version?

I want no dependence on, or interference from, any left over bits of the existing installation. Ideally I want to remove everything from the hard drive and start with a completely clean one.

regular 'Windows 8.1" is known as Windows 8.1 Core - they have since dropped the Core title and just refer to it as Windows 8.1

Most likely your PC came with Windows 8.1 and has a windows 8.1 product key embedded into the firmware..

You can install any version Core or Pro - the correct version for your PC will not ask for a product key as it will read the embedded key
The wrong version will ask you to supply a Retail product key..

You can clean install windows 8.1 and wipe your drive of current data - by choosing the custom install method..

Yes, it was an OEM installation.

That's where I have been confused. The downloaded ISO file wasn't accepted when I came to install it as the only key I have is the embedded on - which I entered.

You can clean install windows 8.1 and wipe your drive of current data - by choosing the custom install method..

What would be the procedure to do that? Install it then remove the unwanted files, or can I wipe the drive clean first (which I would like to do) and then install?

If you want to use the OEM embedded key you have to install the version that it matches. As mentioned, install the incorrect version and you get prompted for a key. Entering the OEM key won't work because it has already been rejected. My laptop came with Windows 8.0 (Core) If I install Windows 8.1 I don't get prompted for a key. If I install 8.1 Pro I do. If I then enter a valid 8.1 Pro key the install continues. With the Media Creation Tool, you have three choices, 8.1, 8,1 Pro, and 8.1 SL. And the 32 bit versus 64 bit choice. The key is good for 32 bit or 64 bit.

My MSDN ISO's are multi edition and will automatically install Core or Pro depending on what OEM key they find. On my laptop 8.1 gets installed automatically. To get pro I then have to use Add features. What I do is add a PID.txt file to my MSDN install media with a Pro key. This stops it from automatically installing 8.1 (Core) and lets me go right to 8.1 Pro. I mention this because if you buy a Retail DVD it may do the same thing and install just 8.1 and not prompt for a key. If you want to install anything other than what the PC came with you will have to buy a new license/product code.

Forgot to mention. If you chose the Custom install option you will get a menu where you can delete any and all partitions on the drive(s). Then create new ones the way you want. Some system partitions will be created automatically in the install process.

That's informative and interesting alphanumeric, thank you. I had misgivings about buying a new retail disc and not being able to install it.

Depending on what HP decides (see my comments in the thread on Windows Secrets forum) I may do that.

If you can figure out what version was installed from the factory you may be able to use the Media Creation Tool to get your install media for nothing. Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help If that works there is no need to buy a Retail Disk.
When I explained my dilemma to Microsoft I was asked for the product key of the installed system. The key is recognised as being for an OEM version and therefore can not be used with a retail version.

That link is where I went to download the ISO file. The versions available do not, understandably, include the OEM one.

That install media will use OEM embedded keys, I've verified it myself. I've used it on my laptop and my OEM embedded key was used automatically. Activated online automatically as well. My MSDN ISO's will also use my laptops OEM embedded key automatically, activates online as well. Both media also accept Retail keys. I've verified that myself too. My MSDN keys are Retail keys.

There are 3 windows 8.1 editions - Windows 8.1 - Windows 8.1 Pro - Windows 8.1 Single Language

Use the Download and Create Media Link > Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

And download the correct Windows 8.1 Edition ISO for your PC - The key being OEM or Retail does not matter when using that setup media.. No matter what some support agent told you..

And here is a utility written by Superfly to help you with the edition

Although most of my embedded key is blocked out - you can see it is an OEM windows 8 Key and my current OS is windows 8.1 - you can also tell it is not Pro or single language (just plain old Core or just standard= Windows 8)

The edition I downloaded and I used to write the ISO file to disc was Windows 8.1.

When I tried to install it, the OEM key which I entered was rejected. However, I now discover that there is another key in the system which ShowKey revealed - Belarc showed only the OEM one.

Why are there two? And what is the significance of "Connected" ?

The original key is the one used previously (- it was meant for those whose had eg. Pro installed then upgraded to WMC and wanted to retrieve the Pro key)

Connected is the internal name for Bing edition.

See if this helps...

I must presume, then, that HP had another version installed before they put mine on.

No, afraid not. It takes me to a OneDrive page which contains a giant icon which seems to be a download link for ShowKey.
