How do I upgrade to a SSD on an Asus?

I got a refurbished asus laptop. It has no recovery partition. I'm currently downloading the USB windows 8.1from this thread - Need help formatted genuine windows 8 in lenovo

I entered my bios via f-9, but don't see where there is an option to change boot to USB. I'm afraid if I pop the SSD in, I'm going to have issues since my windows media is on the USB stick.

Any pointers or links to guides that will enable me to do this successfully?

Try continually pressing "ESC" key on a restart to bring up the one time boot menu where you can select which option to boot from, obviously make sure the USB drive is connected when doing this.

While in BIOS don't forget to switch from IDE to AHCI mode for the SSD.

On my machine, you use F12 to select one-time boot options. To boot from the USB, you then select USB-HDD. Yours may have something similar.

Wanted to drop in and say thanks.

On the Asus it's the escape button, but if a blank drive is inserted like as in my case it will just smart boot to that drive.

I ended up using the Asus Backtraker utility. Worked nicely. After install of the SSD I also used the same utility to delete the recovery partition and get an extra 20GB of space back.

Then, I took the 500GB hard drive I was using for File History on my main machine, created a partition for the Backtracker files and image, and will store it there for future needs should they arise. I like the idea of having file history for the main computer and recovery media for the laptop on the same drive AND I also kept the backtracker info another external hard drive just in case the first drive fails.

OK then so your recovery partition was still intact. As all the Backtracker program does is move the recovery Image to a bootable USB thumb drive.
I would just keep the thumb drive you used to as is for the next time you have to go back to factory image!
And use Macrium Reflect or some other Imaging/back up program and keep several SSD Drive images. The MR Images are of your computer as it is at the time you make the image. And are much quicker to restore than the factory image. Of course you won't have to reinstall all your software and configuration.
