Need to download Windows 8.1 standard for re-install

Need to download Windows 8.1 standard for re-install

I figure this is intuitively obvious to the informed, but clearly I'm not... I found topic(s) in here about re-installing Windows 8.1. They directed me to the "create or download" thing from Microsoft. I'm baffled about exactly which thing I SHOULD be downloading?

I have a Lenovo Y70 and need to install 8.1 onto a new, totally empty, unformatted SSD. As near as I can tell, I need the full version of the standard 8.1 64-bit O/S. Not Pro. If I can get an ISO I can burn it onto a DVD, but WHICH thing do I download from where?

I'll keep rummaging, but if I can get a clear, idiot-proof pointer, that's be helpful as I need to get it downloaded tonight...

    Hello Gracie,

If you like, you can use OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to download a Windows 8.1 ISO to install and activate on your PC.

Looking at the specs page at Lenovo below, you should download a 64-bit "Windows 8.1" ISO file.

Cool... It appears that the create executable reads the product key from the bios... I won't have the laptop back 'til morning, so do I need to wait 'til then and do the download ON the laptop for this to work?

If I download it on the 8.1 Pro desktop is it going to do anything stupid or that will adversely affect the O/S on the desktop in any way?

Nar, you could download the ISO and create a bootable UEFI USB now if you like. This way you'll be ready to go when you get the laptop back.

Um, okay.... Sorry to be difficult, but this tutorial is nuts... I don't know how many steps there are, but this tutorial sends me to ANOTHER one, which after ANOTHER bunch of steps sends me to ANOTHER one.........

Is there any way to JUST download a simple full version 8.1 ISO file I can dump on a DVD and use to boot and install 8.1 using the already existing 8.1 license. How do "normal" people that don't hang out in forums get a copy of 8.1 to re-install when they have a problem?

    "Normal people" can't.

If you know which edition and language you need, you do it like this:

    1. Run the MediaCreationTool.exe

    2. Select the language, Edition and Architecture in the dropdown boxes, then click Next.

It takes a while. You don't need a product key to get the media. You only need product key when you install it. Should be automatically detected during installation.

    OK, that one's downloading..........

Now the next fun part... Is there a fer-real, normal, product key somewhere on this laptop? 'Cause the owner says she can't find anything that looks like the traditional 5-groups-of-5-characters thing on there like there's been for years... I'll look in the morning, but the only thing she found was a Prod ID. Is that the Windows 8 replacement? Or does something have to get the key from the BIOS or is there something smart enough in Windows 8 to activate without all that?

The product key for your laptop will be embedded in the UEFI firmware chip. When you install Windows, Windows will automatically detect and use the key.

Thanks all. got a DVD burned, it appears to start OK, doesn't seem to boot into the installation, but hopefully I can get things working once the laptop gets here later this morning.....

Is Windows 10 going to be less of a PITA or will this just keep getting more bizarre instead of better? Gads, I feel ancient 'cause I LONG for the "good old days" of simple XP installations, and productive start menus with simple interfaces that let you customize what you wanted and actually get work done.
